Don't plan on eating it so don't plan on killing it

My wife would literally kill me if I killed a black bear. They're like her spirit animal or something.

    Grizz, now...that's another story.

(Do not attempt to reason with Mrs. Noodles' logic. You will find out why the black bear is her spirit animal.)

May want to check if any processors would accept donated bear meat. They likely are impacting fawn recruitment.

My thinking (historically) and my wife's is similar to yours (won't eat it)... More I learn the more that mindset is changing.

Do need to thoroughly cook it, but can effectively use bear meat almost the same as pork...and prior to 100yrd ago, bear meat was actually favored over venison.

Sounds about like my Mrs... . I took Gus to the locker yesterday and she cried. This is (was) Gus.

I second the part about pork. Bear makes a great substitute for pork in just about anything, including sausage.

    Aint getting the bear/pork thing?
Bear aint nothing like pork. Bear meat is way more like beef (but better)

I think it has more to do with the greasy texture than flavor. Bear meat lends itself to cooking a lot like pork, but with its unique flavor.

I need to make a RIP headstone for Gus with his picture and tape it to the freezer. She would probably never it beef again. LOL! It's morbidly funny.

Well I scouted a bunch of oak plantings this morning. The place I hunt is a research forest that Purdue university owns. It is very limited access and I have been hunting it for 15 years. These oaks just started producing acorns about three to four years ago and I was very excited about that. This year however there is not one acorn to be found. I even checked out the old growth oaks that occurred naturally and they are not producing either. We had a late frost back in May and I think maybe that's the reason but I'm not sure. Now, if deer fed on walnuts and mosquitoes, I'd be in fat city because there were plenty of those. I did find several fresh scrapes and a few rubs.[IMG]

I’m back up as well! Got to the pond that they were skirting last night and found out why… basically a road out to the cut corn right here… and 30 yards inside the woods is a massive rub… there’s a big pissed off buck in here somewhere, very fresh rub the bark is still alive. Finally got set up in a bigger tree with the saddle, have a tree behind me as well for cover… wind is blowing right out to the field, with the full moon I’m hoping I can walk out without a headlamp first deer

Not many acorns around where I hunt either. But, Arkansas had its driest summer in almost 20 years. The few that are falling from the oaks on my property are about half the normal size.

I'm telling you, these mosquitoes have definitely out stayed their welcome this year. We need a good frost to thin the herd a little!

sounds like you need to do some light grunting perhaps a snort wheeze if you see him! (I don't know why I'm obsessed with grunting today)

Funny how some areas have such a bad acorn crop, and some have a great one. Acorns have been scarce here on my property in East Tennessee for the last two years, but I was talking to a friend today that hunts Ohio public land, and he said acorns are everywhere where he hunts

We have zero white oak acorns this year, but are LOADED with acorns from red oaks. They are literally everywhere. some spots on the trails are completely covered, like walking on marbles. Good to see a solid food source during the winter I guess.

Nice looking rub!! Everything will be changing for the better in a week or so!!! It's almost here!
