If I had to guess I would say that this buck was living in about a 50 acre area. This spot had everything he needed and no reason to leave. I pretty sure I bumped him on the 3rd day after the shot. Which he ran off the property and onto private land. The section woods was very tiny and don't believe he stayed there. Which at some point he came back to his home. Here is another crazy part. He died in the very bed that I shot him out of. His bed was 60 yards from the tree I shot him from that night. I walked this spot at least a 3 or 4 times over the past 2 weeks.

It's is unbelievable. I know I can't believe the way it happen. I was just grid searching the whole time. The blood trail only went 75 yards. I would say his core area was about 50 acres, just had everything he needed. It's so thick that you would have to step on him to even find him. I wasn't out there looking for him or believed he was alive. I was purely looking for his skeleton. After the 2nd day I stopped carrying my bow, I thought he was dead by then, but I was wrong. Thank goodness he wasn't alive when we walked up on him yesterday.

Curious on how he smelled the infection must have been ...serious. So glad you found him. We've all been there, just not as fortunate nor as dogged. Kudos!

He was skin and bones. And had a severe curved spine. His hind legs were smaller then his front legs. His back straps were almost completely gone. His hide was like leather and the meat all looked blood shot. Very strong and sour smell to the meat. I couldn't salvage anything from him. His body was eating it self just to survive. It was completely horrible, don't wish that on any animal. Feel like crap for that.

I can see feeling bad though in a deers life this could have ended much worse for him in so many different ways..believe me I've seen it. I shot a buck that looked like you described. I thought it had an arrow sticking straight up out of his spine yet he was still following a doe. When I recovered him it wasn't an arrow. It was one of his ribs.
He had been hit by a car and his entire front shoulder looked as you described and the infection was massive. I turned it into the DEC for a new tag because of being inedible. They are tough tough animals.

That's incredible that you found him in the same bed you shot him from in the first place. I guess he probably felt safe there. You said you checked it a couple of other times when you were looking for him. There's no way to know but it wouldn't surprise me if you might have even ran him out of there on one of those visits.

Just to be clear I didn't shoot him in is bed. He got up from it and walked by me. The shot was 21 yards. His bed was only 60 yards from the tree I climbed.

Yes, that's how I took it. Did you set up in that spot because you knew about the bed?

I had a member question me and took it as I was taking 60 yard shots, so that was what that reply was about.

Yes and no on the bed. 3 hunts before I had 2 bucks get up from that spot. I was moving in to make the kill. Took 3 moves to get into the right spot.

I'm always impressed with you guys that can find those buck beds. In all my years of hunting I've never been able to consistently do that. I almost always know where the doe bedding areas are but those buck beds elude me. Props to your skills as a woodsman!

Started loading up all my gear in the truck for this evenings hunt. Go to load up the bike and what would you know the front tire is flat. At least I have enough time to fix it and plenty of time to hunt this evening. Good luck to anyone getting in stand today. Overcast with decent wind so should at least see some deer on the hoof!

A bit too warm for me, in high 70's...I'm getting some work out of the way until weather turns a bit. Then I can have what I go for....an enjoyable time with the hope of success to boot.

Have to admit, from the perspective of TX, I am definitely jealous of those getting the cooler temps.
Will be out this weekend and the low is set to be in the upper 60's. Plus side is deer down here move in the early hours of the morning pretty consistently, but it definitely isn't even really cool yet by any stretch of the imagination.
Yes, I could wait for cooler temps, but there are so many people that get out once rifle season kicks off beginning of November, that it just gets much harder to anticipate activity when that time hits.

I'll be headed out in the AM for a few hours, then trying to find a spot for my dad who should be joining me in the woods starting next week. We have a ladder stand for him, so I need to find a spot where we can conceal the stand, and have a good shot at seeing movement. Being on the ground, he hasn't seen anything in the past two seasons.
