The real kicker is if I was able to get to the tree I couldn’t find this morning, I would have had a clear shot under 20 yards at the big ol nanny doe while her kids watched in horror. Lol! Awesome sit for sure though!

I’m down and back in the Jeep. Got some errands to do this afternoon so no afternoon hunt today. The spot I was in this morning was an area that I haven’t hunted in a few years. Back in the day it used to be a heavy travel Corredor in the morning between food and bedding. It hasn’t been active the past few seasons though, but given the amount of fresh sign and deer seen today, it appears active. I’ll probably be out there again Thursday morning. This time I’m going to find a tree I want to get to lol

Sounds like there is some food source in the area that only peaks every few years, figure out what that is and be on top of it while it is hot!

Not sure if it is acorns, it very well could be white oaks dropping. The red oaks are pissing acorns everywhere. I can't step anywhere in the woods without stepping on acorns. This area is near the property line, and a few hundred yards (400-500) on the private property is a house, with a small field. perhaps there's a food plot there, or they have a garden with some good eating in it. Either way, I'll definitely spend some more time there!

Alright. What an insanely busy weekend. Finally getting around to reading the forum from the last 3 days. Congrats to everyone who has killed and thank you to everyone who sent me messages/congratulations.

I run about 8 cameras almost year round on the little 50 acres that I get to hunt and don't believe I've ever gotten a picture of this fella. I had been sitting in a stand that is on the edge of a swamp that is pure bedding. To my knowledge no one has stepped foot in there in a few years, so I really never know what's going to come out.

I had sat in this stand 4 times prior to this last week and had not seen him or any other bigger deer. I was essentially just out there sitting to get intel on how deer were using the property and trying to lay eyes on one of the few big deer I have had on camera. I will also note I didn't pay attention to the wind or anything on any of my sits. The stand is on the edge of our property and my access is excellent for afternoon hunts. As I stated about 30 minutes before he stepped out I was getting whipped around in the tree from NW winds after a cold front had just moved through. I wasn't expecting to see anything honestly.

Think it was just before 6pm when I looked over my shoulder and saw him abut 55 yards to my north in the swamp/willows just feeding on the low hanging leaves. I saw antlers and immediately thought it was a shooter. I watched him for maybe 30 seconds before he disappeared into the thick stuff. He looked like he was moving my way so I stayed ready with my bow. About 10 minutes went by before he finally popped out at 30 yards across the drainage ditch I was sitting on. I could see him much better at this point and knew that if he came closer I was going to take a shot. He had 2 trails he could have took, one that would have taken him away from me and the shot would have been 30+ yards, or follow the trail right to my tree. He decided to take the trail going under my tree. Luckily I had a NW wind and he came from the North and was traveling south so he never winded me. He got to 5 yards to the edge of the drainage and just stood there eating leaves. He turned broadside numerous times and I had a perfect opening in the tree I was in to take a shot. I tried standing up 3-4 times but each time he would lift his head. I decided to wait for him to make his next move instead of forcing something. He picked the wrong move and came directly under my tree and right in front of me at about 2 yards. I gave him a light meh, he stopped, looked away from me, I settled the pin and drove it right through the lungs and heart. He tried running back where he came from but was expired within 10 yards.

Got him butchered up Saturday morning and shared fresh backstraps with my friends at halftime of the Vikings game yesterday.

I haven't scored him yet but will do that sometime this week. Sure I have bigger deer running around, but I couldn't be any happier with this deer as my first buck with the bow. Now it's time to take a bit of a break and then try getting a doe on the ground.

I am secretly sad that I don't get to chase bucks during the rut. This is by far the earliest I've essentially been done hunting for bucks.

    And on that note...

Hunt that property line and find out what's going on. Use every square inch of that public, that's what it's for. Then once you figure out some travel pattern, then move in deeper to public to give your self a buffer. Doesn't hurt to work back from a food source if there is one. I have hunted trees with the boundaries marker on the tree I was in. It's useful to know why the deer go to the neighbor and or come from the neighbor to the public.

Awesome job! Your patience paid off big time. Good on you for waiting on a perfect shot, that's a very hard thing to do!

Looks like I will be in the stand this evening. First sit since Saturday over a week ago. Been shooting my bow all weekend trying to work out some problems, but now I'm reset and back to shooting great!

Congrats and thanks for the story. Are you limited to just one buck, or have you already harvested two this season?
