Deer is cut up! Fresh backstraps and jerky being made tomorrow. Good luck PM shift. Spill some blood! Congrats @cls74 !
Back in my car. Nice and wet. Have I mentioned that I hate the rain? I literally melt in the effing rain!! You’re going to see a rare side of me tomorrow and possibly Friday hunting in the rain. I am going to bch and moan on an epic level...
Some seasons you are the hammer and some seasons you are the nail. I am the nail. Not a darn thing seen.
Light has almost gone, seen 7 bucks, 1 doe, 2 fawns and a coyote. I’ll be back out in the morning for another all day sit.
Back home, deer is at the processor which was the stupidest thing I have dealt with Tell them I am dropping off a deer. She takes my name and phone number then asks "Did the broadhead come out clean" I knew what she meant but so badly wanted to say, "Not really, it had blood and some foreign matter on it" luckily she couldn't see my smirk behind the mask lol. Then she passes it off to the order taker guy. I tell him standard processing. He asked if I wanted the inner loins whole I said yes, he asked back straps and I said butterflied steaks. Then it got totally stupid, he asked how many roasts, so I asked how they normally do the standard cuts. He looked confused and said they normally say how many roasts they want. I said will they do the sirloin tip[ roast or round roasts if I say 2, he had no answer, so I said 2. Then he asks how many steaks I want, WTF kind of question is that? what happens if I say 132? Ended up putting down "As many as can" Then he asks me if I wanted any specialty grinds, sausage, add bacon, snack sticks etc. I said no. He said well we have to grind something. I said I just want plain burger. WTF!?!?! So the customer before me said he wanted his rack before he left and the guy told him they would cut it off or give him the whole head. I didn't need to ask about that. Go back to drop the deer off and tell him I just want the skull cap. "We don't do skull caps, only the entire head". I told him to cut it off behind the ears then, the guy before me the dude cut it off with about 14" of neck meat still attached. This is a reputable meat processor who has been doing it for decades. Not sure if it is because of the other processors not taking deer this year or just lack of good help. So now I have to cut the antlers off myself and dispose of the head. UGH!! End rant, more on actual hunt shortly
No regrets here, just surprised at how bad I judged this one. I was literally trying to figure out if I call the taxi or not on the way back up to get the retrieval gear. So glad I didn't, would have been an embarrassing call back saying never mind
Saw several more bucks One half rack Noe decent...maybe shooter One nicer one breeding a doe right now. Probably sit for bit before getting down.
So remember my coming home on the ridge trail last night, then I heard and saw a big tree fall on ridge tonight? Ya I went to check trail on way home. This is a blind I hunted fall turkey from this year and hunt during Xbow and gun every year. Just the top have of tree fell...notice my boat seat under it. I'm either lucky or my lucks running out. I walked past this last night. And yes blew up right across my trail what a mess.
The little unknowns that we should but rarely do think about. Sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on your woods for the most part from past postings, but shows how we can miss things if there is even a way to see them to begin with. Glad no one was harmed. Kinda interesting timing as well. I've mentioned previously the tree I was in today "Walnut stand" has been dying/dead for a couple years and will likely topple over the next 2-3 years. A little TMI, Noticed today when I relieved myself that standing like I always do the stream now lands off to the left of the ladder where it used to be straight out in front of the ladder. I think the tree has already started the leaning process and may be falling sooner than I thought. Just a bit of useless info I pondered about today
My processor also left 10lbs of neck meat on the cape. Taxi sent this pic and asked if I wanted to save it...
Be careful out there! That beech had been hidden by a red oak. The base half showed signs of beech canker but did not show the rot signs that top had. . Beech canker usually takes some time to drop them. It was a big beech that was actually farther up on ridge than the trail. You'd think it had a honing devise on it targeting that blind. I shot a few turkey, deer and two raccoons from that blind. The raccoons tried crawling in blind with me and I dropped both with one shot. Good memories
