Guys here's a dilemma I'm facing. If you don't want to take time to go through a long read that is not hunting related, you may want to skip this post. My problem is that my birth mother passed away the other day. I say birth mother because I never had much of a relationship with her throughout my life. There was some trouble between her and my dad when they were young married. To make along story short, she abandoned me when I was less than 2 years old. Over the years I've had some contact with her, even took care of her in the hospital a few times. But there have also been times that I ran into her on the street and she didn't know who I was. Anyway, my brother-in-law called me to tell me that she was dying and they weren't going to do anything more for her. I asked to speak with her on the phone. I told her that I didn't hold anything against her and that I know that everyone makes mistakes. She told me that she always loved me and wished she could have spent more time with me. Well that last point is contestable but I'm not going to argue with someone who is dying. She passed away the next day. Well I'm not home and the funeral is Wednesday. For some reason, although I shouldn't feel this way, I do feel obligated to be there. So as I sit here I am wrestling with that and I'm just venting. I usually try to be more positive but this is tough.

    Thats a tough one Jim.
But if you're looking for any insight, I personally think funerals are ridiculous.

damn Jim...that is a tough one for sure. Sorry for your loss. Even though you didn’t have a good relationship with her, it is still a loss. I am glad you were able to make your peace with her before she passed. I’m sure that in time that will help with the grieving process.

only advice I can offer is for you to think of how you might feel if you go, what are your expectations? And vice versa, how would you feel if you didn’t go, what’s the worse that would come of it and are you comfortable with that being a possibility that you couldn’t change by not going.

tough call for sure my friend.

My humble opinion is that the saying good by, speaking to someone before they leave the earth is very important, if you know it is coming. The funeral is not so important, they are gone, it is a ceremony. There spirit is with Christ or it is not. There is nothing more that we can do to love our fellow human being. Just my thoughts and I'm sure some would disagree.

Do what feels right in your heart.

That is a tough thing to go thru Jim. Trust your gut on what to do. You will need to live with your decision. Another way to look at is there any family that will be there that you can be there for. Some times just showing up and and supporting the family that is hurt from this is a big help. Sorry for your loss.

Just my thoughts.. Funerals aren't for the deceased. They are for the family.

Your heart will lead you to the answer Jim.

Vent away "family" is a tough thing, I actually really understand. Similar situation though my Father. He left and left us destitute. He was a beater and he didn' t care who or age. My mom died and I was forced to live with him. Long short I cut ties when a teen and moved out. I cut him off then due to other situations both siblings. Funny how in the end some people reach out to,well hedge bets on after life. Apologies for me weren't rebuffed but not excepted as a personal thing.
Here's the thing about life, you can not choose family unless getting married. If there are people you meet in life that make your life worse you would walk away. It's self preservation. I told these people that had I met them on the street they wouldn't and I wouldn't initiate a freindship, we would not like each other. So there was no reason to make life more challenging over a word, "family"
So don't dwell, just except and live your life the best you can for your self and the family you've chosen.

That’s a hard one Jim. If I were in your shoes I wouldn’t beat myself up over not being there. It’s not like you’re sitting at home with nothing to do and just aren’t going out of spite. It’s kind of an ironic situation. Sorry for your loss.

I was in that boat yesterday. I went anyway and seen one buck.
I'm waiting on this front to pass with thunderstorms and heavy rain. I'll be out after that. Wind is supposed to howl and temps to drop to 41 by 5pm. It's 66 here now. Hopefully will see some movement even though it'll be windy.

    Good Luck, everyone!

    Tough one, Jim.
Never being in this spot it's impossible to give you any advice. I wish you the best in your decision and may your birth mother RIP.
