If you can do that at 20, 25 and 30 consistently then you’re ready.

Yes, I rarely take a shot over 30. Its just not an absolute kill and I like absolute kills. Up close and personal.

I regularly shoot out to 80 yards when practicing, but when I’m hunting in the woods 30 yards is a long-ish shot for me. Up close and personal is 10 yards or less.

I’ll also add that I’ve flat out missed a couple of those up close and personal shots because I was rattled.

My biggest bucks I've shot at 6-8yds, very cool to be that close.

Who's the first to put down a 125" + in this thread, not the contest, this thread.

I'm taking Holt. Not because of teammate status, but because he was on some bucks last year that survived(hopefully?) and he is mobile. Plus think he starts here pretty quick and where better to start than where you last left off.

Yessir, had a chocolate horned 8 he was trying to intercept if I recall correctly. Only had a few tree options surrounding the bedding.

Alright guys PA is still awhile out to hunt but I’m thinking of which stand I want to hunt, obviously going to check sign and everything closer to the opener, but I wanted to get your guys opinions on hunting what I believe to be an escape route on opening day. There is a clear cut that hasn’t quiet grown up and a large chunk of public woods that gets hit pretty hard, there’s a 30yd wide strip of woods that goes a good 1/4 mile and connects to some private that eventually connects to a property that I know is not hunted at all which is very rare in this area. I’m thinking as soon as the bigger bucks in the area sense hunters they will use this trail to escape. What do you guys think? Theoretically it makes sense for me lol IMG_3332.JPG

I plan to head in there on opening day if the wind is right. I know the deer will be there, just not sure which ones. I never heard of anyone shooting the big 8 pt, but I don't know any of the hunters in that area anyway. There was a really nice chocolate 10 pt in there that I blew out. Hopefully he is still around. Its prime buck bedding so anything could be in there. Also I had a huge 10 pt in there 2 years ago and would love to see him back. I did find one of his sheds that year. September 11 can't get here fast enough!

I don't know the area, and I'm not a big map hunter like some with the prowess on here.

Yellow arrow I see as sun angle from ESE.

Blue circle I see as a pasture/wooded type setting. Open areas of grassy foelds interspersed with trees. Proba ly a good morning doe travel route with browse/grasses/

The elongated red looks a lot like a highline clearing and along it where circled in purple or whatever color looks like longer shadows creating dips in the terrain.

Depending on the growth in that area that whole length could be prime bedding with expansive views north and south.circled areas within could be low spots with a creek or valley.

Don't listen to me though

What does the surrounding terrain look like? Where is the nearest water? Post a wider view.

This strip of woods is located at the bottom of a big ridge, there is a small creek that runs down the ridge and goes through the strip of woods, IMG_3333.JPG

Looks like alot of big woods. If it is then you will need to look for terrain features like pinch points, trail crossings at your brook and oak groves on ridges.

    @virginiashadow or @Holt

Up until I got a saddle (I saddle hunt btw) I was more excited for those two's season more than my own! Now that I saddle hunt I can go to the deep spots and get in on the action. Some of the spots that I've previously scouted with the most prominent land features and mature buck sign are now reachable for me because of the saddle (I saddle hunt btw).
