Well, I passed on a really nice but young 8, he was inside his ears and if I didn’t know the 12pt was within my reach, I would have taken him. But, I don’t and if he can survive to next year, he’s going to be a brute. Nice tall symmetrical rack, really good looking deer, had a limp though.
Overall, I was surrounded by deer. As I was walking out into the field, the thermals hit me in the face and I got a big whiff of estrous, I’ve never smelled a real deer and thought it wasn’t possible, but damn, it smelled like someone held a bottle of piss right in my face. As I crest the hill, there is a lone doe, it was crazy, I still don’t believe I smelled a doe.
Even after all the shooting, it turned out to be a good evening, I left my stuff in the tree for the morning, I think I got the funnel pegged down. fingers crossed 12 pack is dead by 0700.

Banking client = time in the stand tomorrow. Think I'll give my new spot a second shot for a morning sit. Minor tweak on setup and I found a better route in...but it's still 2 miles, each way.

Starting the last 5 days of archery tomorrow. The gloves are coming off. No free passes. Trying a stand I haven’t been in lately for the morning sit. Seen 1 nice buck up there a couple weeks ago while walking in. I’d love a crack at him tomorrow.

Not a damn thing for me tonight. Was colder tonight than it was this morning.

Sister in law got a 5pt so I got to put my hands on a deer helping drag/clean it. Just amazed at the lack of activity. Can’t get over it. Whitetail deer are weird as hell.

Just a observation that seems to happen to me. The cold snap, I don't seem to see as many deer. But next day as temp stabilize, I get more movement. But in the late season, the colder the better. Don't know this holds true or not and my not be the case for were you hunt. I have also seen great movement after a rapid warm up, same effect as a cold front.

I'm home! Gear is squared away and I'm having a dang beer before bed. Gonna be weird weather day but I'll probably be at it for all but an hour for lunch. It's good to be home. giphy%20(1).gif

I think our area, a lot of the bucks are locked downed with does right now. Throw in the gun season, equals night activity unfortunately.

Yeah man I like pre rut so much better. Luckily we are probably a week behind you on lock down, or I like to think so. I've always heard peak rut here is more or less the next 7 days for this neck of the woods. I'm looking for a buck that typically shows in daylight around this time of year and gun season is a week out. Hopefully you have some luck regardless.
