This is awesome! Good for you to invest time in a younger hunter. Any pics of the buck? Congrats to him

Hurting this am. My shot window is tight. In the thick stuff hope the guns push them in here. One gunshot already this am.

Alright sorry guys, I woke up later then I should have and didn’t have a lot of time at home this morning.

So my mentor, role model, best friend, and number one fan, my dad after 30+ years killed a great deer at home during bow season. He’s had some tough breaks on good deer and this one could have went south in a hurry.

That stand that he was hunting last night is situated just inside of a small pine thicket that butts up to an overgrown crp field. It is a great transition area, the deer come out of a river bottom across the road and cut the corner where my dads stand is on their way to an ag field on the neighbors property.

Around 5:00 my dad spots this buck milling back and forth in the crp field scent checking for does. He is fixated on this deer watching every step when he hears a grunt to his left, a small buck, the buck he shot also heard the grunt and now the stage it set! The little buck keeps grunting up a storm and the big one is slowly making his way towards my dad and the small buck. Finally he is in range at 22 yards but he is facing my dad. All of a sudden the buck goes on high alert (I think he caught some ground scent), the deer begins to turn and my dad cuts the bolt loose.

My dads heart sank into his stomach as the deer runs off 50 yards and hunches up immediately. He watched him until he lost sight. Here is where is got interesting, It is 15 minutes to dark so my dad gets down and goes what he thought was the safe way back to the house. As he came around the corner of a small group of trees he spots the buck standing in a small clearing, the buck spots him but stands there so my dad just crouches down and waited. I think this was a blessing because he actually cut the deer off and made him go back towards the middle of his property. The time passes and my dad continues to his house and when he gets to the edge of the yard the aloof light by his walk in cooler turns on and he AGAIN spots the buck but this time he is bedded I. The yard 30 yards away from the walk in cooler and the deer gets up again and staggers back into the woods.

My dad calls me and says he’s going after him! After a few choice words I talked him out of tracking him until I got there which I couldn’t get there for another couple hours. When I showed up at 8:45 we talked for a while and got all of our ducks in a row and headed to where the buck was bedded in the yard. There was some bubbles but mostly dark liver blood so we eased down the edge of the yard slowly scanning with the spotlight and he was looking for blood. I ended up spotting the buck not 15 yards out of the yard before my dad did, he was dead. I absolutely freaked out and pretty much tackled my dad. It was an emotion that I haven’t felt before!

At this point in my life my hunting career has completely came full circle. Every hunt of mine where I had asked my dad for advice ran through my head in a split second. My dad was now asking me for advice, what would I do, how would I do it, should we look for him. As a grown man now with kids of my own I couldn’t help it and started crying, we both had a moment as we were standing over my dads biggest buck ever.

Sorry for the long read but it’s a story that I had to share. Enjoy the story and photos! Good luck to everyone out this morning!
