Hard to even guess from the limited amount you've given. I'm assuming you backed out and didn't jump him up again and seeing snow on the ground tells me it's cold there. Its gonna be a long night for you I'm sure, but pick up the track in the morning. You'll have a better idea as you track tomorrow. Usually give an animal an hour at least after a shot unless it goes down in sight. Keep us posted on the track tomorrow since there are good folks here willing to help as much as we can. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

There was no blood on it and I couldn’t see any on the ground around where he fell

It’s not uncommon to not have any blood at the impact site, especially if you hit him higher up. It takes a little longer for the blood to build up and spill out.

But if that is the best blood you found in 150 yards of trailing, it’s tough to tell. The best thing you can do is get some rest and check tomorrow, usually a deer will bed down not to far after being shot.

How much of your broken arrow did you recover? It will help us get an idea of how much penetration you got. And if that broad head is still in him I cannot imagine he is doing so well.

    Hoping you find him!

Was the deer broadside? Quartering away or toward? Just wondering since you didn't get a pass through on the shot. What broad head are you using?

It’s possible you hit his shoulder, that would explain the limp. And if your broadhead didn’t break the skin on the other side you are only going to have one hole that is partially plugged by what’s left of your arrow. Provided you got decent arrow penetration you very easily could have a dead deer. It’s just tough to tell without seeing the arrow, or knowing where you hit him for sure.

What did it sound like when you hit him? If you can remember?

The buck was broadside at approximately 25 yards I was planning on using my 30 yd pin but I don’t remember much about the actual shot

I remember hearing a bit of a snap or crack but idk if it was the arrow hitting a leaf or maybe when it broke when he fell...

I’d back out, if you aren’t sure you made a fatal hit it’s best to let him lay down and die. If you push him you might not find him. The only exception would be if you are worried about warm temps and meat spoiling before you can search. But judging by the snow on the ground I wouldn’t guess that will be an issue.

    I’m shooting a 31.5 inch arrow with 125 gr head from 65#
How much penetration should I expect if I hit the leg?

Gotta agree with axtell in that you probably have a dead deer if you got good penetration. Half an arrow is good penetration and it may be buried in the far shoulder. That's a heavy fixed blade. Just stick with the track and hope for the best.

Well a snap or a crack definetly sounds like heavy bone. If you felt like it was higher up, then it is shoulder hopefully, it doesn’t take too much penetration to kill a deer. But the tracking job might be a pain. Hopefully you can see more in the daylight: wishing you the best. Keep us posted!
