Well the deer won lol just made it back to the car. Never saw another one. I can’t wait til I can get these deer in a cold weather late season pattern. This “secondary rut” has me guessing. Feel like I should mention the tree I was hunting was where i shot my buck last year. This is my second year on this farm. Gonna give that tree another go in the morning and if no luck I’m moving up the hill about 50 yards. I found a tree on the way out but it looks like I can only get up about 18ft with little to no cover so kinda stuck. Downfall of only having a climber ha. Also very thankful that Justin Zarr donated a lifeline to me this morning. My stands platform was solid ice and even though I didn’t slip I sure felt relaxed and safe being attached.

I'm finally back in a tree for the first time since I killed the little doe a week ago.

We had a house guest for a few days and I spent some time with her and my wife.

I was going to hunt yesterday but I got busy putting a through-wall exhaust vent in the bathroom in this new place. It didn't have one.

I hadn't done this before and I was a bit nervous cutting a hole in the exterior wall but it worked out well.

    Now let's see some deer.

Is it bad I’m already changing my bow setup for next season?

Sitting in an old ground blind this evening, haven’t hunted here all season. Pretty thick in here, 80 yds off the ag field edge. Not my favorite spot but this creek bottom is a pretty good travel corridor with lots of cover and bedding to my east. Big winter storm rolling in tomorrow so hoping to catch a buck on his feet a little early tonight. Good luck all!

I'll tell ya what, late season has one advantage. Legal sgooting light is 6:39am. Pretty much back to the time schedule I was on pre time change in the early rut stage

Alarm set and about to watch a few hours of THP before bed. Have a good inch or two of snow on the ground, temps below freezing and light winds forecast. Might not be ideal but I can work with them.

    Tonight
Mostly clear, with a low around 15. North wind 3 to 7 mph.

    Friday
Sunny, with a high near 30. Light north wind.

    Friday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 18. Northeast wind 3 to 5 mph.

    Saturday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 32. East northeast wind 6 to 9 mph.

    Saturday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. Northeast wind around 9 mph.

    Sunday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Northeast wind 8 to 10 mph.

I'm still playing catchup on THP. A ton of great content.

I'm the same way. Wanted to start from the beginning, not sure when their videos started. Was watching some 2017 stuff but could not get it to play in order, started watching 2018 derr tour and it plays in order back to back.

I swear it is going to ruin a lot of my hunts. I have thought about climbing down before after seeing deer skirt by and see if I can intercept, but never tried. This might be that "fix" that ruins me

It is so encouraging to go in knowung that it is super unpressured this year, secondary rut probably going on, fresh snow and 3 days off.

I'm trying to tell myself not to shoot a doe early, but temptation may get the best of me should opportunity knock. If I do, I'll dress her out and if I can get enough clean snow, I'll stuff her full and drag her to within eyesight and continue hunting. If I muck things up enough, may just scout a bit and try to find some fresh beds/good sign since I know the snow is less than 24 hours old.

Come up with a plan for 5 day weekends come Christmas and New Years.

They would move and build a ground blind out of bark strips.

Didn’t see a deer tonight until the walk back to the truck. Counted 11 sets of eyes in the field with my headlamp.

I watch it and just wonder one thing.

Do they do any type of real scent control or are they strictly wind amd therms? I have never seen them spray or wipe down themselves or gear. They always lounge around in their hunting gear, half the time they wear non hunting attire in some fashion while hunting.

I'm sure they do, and maybe an episode I haven't watched has explained it, but it's fascinating in some aspects of how plain and simple they make it look. What you can and cannot get away with when deer are so close. They obviously take extreme caution with wind/thermals and entry.

I’ll be out in the morning. Headed back to where I got the double 3 weeks ago.
It’s been left alone since that day and wind is right.
20 degrees in the morning and I’m stoked to get back out!
Hopefully they aren’t too shocked from the gun seasons.
    Good luck everyone!

I’ve watched all but a couple 2018 and some 2017 episodes. I’ve never seen the practice scent control. Just rely on the milkweed. Lol
