After three days of hard work getting repairs done to the new house I slept in a bit this morning, loaded my gear and made the 30 minute drive to our spot in Mark Twain National Forest.

I am sitting in "my" valley and I was all set up by 11:00. It's a new moon and the rut should be on.

    Anything can happen here.

Only problem is I don't have any help at all if I have trouble. I guess I'd better make a good shot if I get a chance.

So was a G5 montec. Rules out mechanical failure.

Ran 50 yds and stopped, then 40 yds and stopped and then ran 110yds approx. and entered woods.

Something about that deer running for those distances does not scream guts immediately, especially when not pushed. Normally tail twitches and walk offs.

Maybe he did get back of both lungs hitting back ribs on both sides?

Alright man! I hope you find this guy. You want me to head out and help you search for him. I have a half hour left on my lunch hour:tu:

You might as well call in sick to work because you'll be sick in the stomach having to wait it out. Best of luck on the recovery.

Or maybe and hopefully that deer was quartered away slightly at impact and it stuck in the good stuff on opposite side.

From his post it doesn't sound like he went very far into the treeline, just ssid he may have found some fresh tracks.

Hopefully he's within 50yds of where he entered.

Just something about what the deer did after the shot is baffling.

Bucks are adrenalind filled right now, so I guess anything is possible.

I've shot deer and when I walked up to them thought "wow, that's not where I thought I hit" when I see the entry.

So as kids we couldn't find matching socks. Now as adults it's a hassle finding matching gloves.

    This is ridiculous.

It is gonna be one chilly friggin morning here Saturday. Low 19 that morning. 17 is the coldest I've hunted and that wasnt much fun but resulted in a nice rifle 8 point on public land Nov 12, 2000. I couldn't feel the trigger when I squeezed off the shot. Lol.

    Good luck out there folks!

Okie, give that bad boy some time and good luck on the recovery!

They tend to run like a bat out of hades if they get hit in the chest (ribs) and run with much less vigor when hit in the belly. Since the arrow did not pass through, I'm going to guess it entered in belly, hit some guts maybe, most likely got some liver, and then got lodged in the ribs - maybe getting part of the offside lung. He won't go much farther than the 200 yards....and when he uses a range finder, find out it was less than he thought. I wish I could help him. I LOVE tracking deer.

The weather is crap here today - wet and blustery. I have to teach class tonight, so I can't hunt anyways.

    Excited for Okie.
What time you headed back Okie?

Can you upload a screen shot of where you are hunting?

Yeah, my seat that I forgot up in the bed of the truck Friday? Yep, it was still in the bed of the truck this morning

Hopefully this wind and sun will dry it out. Probably won't hunt that ladder stand until Thursday or Friday depending how things look movement wise.

I'd hope he wouldn't try to cross the water. I think my strategy would be to enter the woods where he went in, search quietly on hands and knees looking for blood. If some is found maybe back out then walk the eastern edge of the woods slowly looking for blood if he exited that side and then the same thing on the south edge before ever trailing him in the woods and possibly pushing him out if he is still in them. It doesn't look that big, if you find blood early and then do not find any on the outer edges but after tracking you do, it will give you a better idea of when he exited the woods and whether you pushed him.

    Easier said than done

Edit, he'd likely stay on trails so that is where I would focus on blood exiting the woodlot.
