Seems to me, more deer are lost on shoulder shots than hitting to far back. The liver and intestines are killing shots....be patient. Every deer shot through the stomach dies...although that could take a while.

FYI... he was walking as he wouldn’t stop ... perfectly broadside ... exit was a little further back ... got both lungs and liver... no gut... arrow fell out 10 yards after shot

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but killing shots do not equal recovering shots. When I say "shoulder wrecker" I mean the meaty area above and maybe slightly in front of the elbow. That triangle between the top of the scapula, elbow, and right behind the actual shoulder joint.

    triangle of death.jpg

I'd never shoot AT the shoulder blade itself*. Sure mistakes happen- I've lost 2 bucks personally on shoulder-area shots- one of which I am nearly certain lived, and the other I am nearly as certain died. It happens.

But suffice to say, if you try to and are successful in making the exit wound in or anywhere near the neon area above the elbow from any shot angle; you have a dead deer. Lot of margin for error there.

    * OK, I have, would and will with a rifle on a quartering-to shot.

Again, I am not being critical of Okie at all. I am just saying look at a deer's anatomy and it's easy to see how quick "a little back of the heart" turns into "son-of-a-" stomach shot.

Well that was my least aggressive hunt of the year and I didn't see anything. I will make sure I'm aggressive tomorrow.

    Good luck fellas

Okie, take a look at that pic I posted. You think liver or low enough to be gut?

My interpretation of what he described is this, maybe a smidgeon lower, he said midway and a little back.

Got my clothes in the wash. Just filled the truck up. Now I wait for the morning.

Can I make it 3 years in a row killing on Nov. 7th?

I was 112, usually wait until the evening to see what turnout looked like. Past midter. election I was in the 170'ish range at 5pm. Looks like people are getting out here.

I went back through a re-read all of Okie's posts. Not sure where I got the idea it was also a bit low.
If it's more like Tony's or the pic that CLS posted; I feel a lot better. But still give him at least 4 hours.
