Wow. I don’t even know what to say. That’s really good advice; it’s something I admittedly lose sight of far to often. Reading this post, and the reactions to this post actually kind of made me put things in perspective. I don’t hunt with anyone. My older brother unintentionally got me into the sport. I wanted to do anything just to be like him. He hunted. And hunting stuck. From there it became not just the reason I don’t play a fall sport but my obsession. My year revolves around longing to skip school on October 1st and speed home (whoops this is awkward) to get to my stand every day after school. I drive 130 miles across the top of Illinois to hunt every weekend by myself and switch between staying with a family friend in his guest room and sleeping in my car. In some scenarios the solitude is nice, but in most, I wish I had someone to share it all with. My parents make it all possible for me to do this. Every spot and opportunity I have to hunt - well, everything I do - is because of them and what they do for me. That said, my dad hunts 3 days a year maybe. Not because he doesn’t like it, but because he’s busy at work busting his ass all year long so I can do what I love.

I joined this forum for posts like that. It’s sounds weird I know. But it’s a bunch of people who have something in common with me. Obviously that something being bowhunting. There are 900 kids at my high school. I know that’s not big. But it’s still 900 kids. Not one of them hunts - that I know of. There may be someone else who hides it like I do. But I doubt it. It’s almost taboo in my community.

As for my older brother, well for one he lives in Missouri. I see him on major holidays each year and could talk to him over the phone about his hunts. But we haven’t spoken in 2 and a half years now. I’ve found that some of the people whom I have the most commonalities shared with are older guys. It just seems weird. But it’s because when I find hunters I also find a desire to be around them and pick their brains and just talk to them.

I’m not throwing myself a pity party by any means. I’m ridiculously fortunate. This is just my hunting story. People always ask me how I got into it. I never know how to answer. For most, it seems to be that they’ve been walking into a blind wearing orange with their fathers since they were old enough to wield a rifle. Not me. I just kinda happened upon this sport and learned/mistaked my way through it all. That process is still in its early stages obviously. I read every article I can get my hands on ans talk to anyone I can. Hunting is my secret life. When people come over I lock my bedroom door so they don’t see the animal wax museum full of heads that it is.

I feel that hunters share some sort of intangible bond that can’t really be explained. It’s just that mutual attraction to that thing that you couldn’t begin to quantify. It’s a certain draw to people, the same as the sport really. For me anyway.

I haven’t been posting on here as much this year simply because I got a new phone and changed carriers and I just wasn’t getting as good of signal in my hunting spots this year. Despite my absence in some days, not a day has gone by where I failed to read what all happened with you guys. I love this thread and the incredible lessons and stories that have come from all of you who contribute to it. The internet, though consuming, is a beautiful thing because of stuff like this.

Wow I got side tracked. Anyway, thank you for your post. I sincerely appreciate it, as it initiated a great deal of reflection for me.

It would be nice if you could find yourself a hunting buddy . Especially when hunting so far from home . Be careful hunting by yourself

Kid, you are wise beyond your years. I am thrilled you are part of, not only this fourum, but the hunting community as well? You are already miles ahead of most of your peers.

 but unfortunately I'm waiting to board a flight, instead of hunting.

I’m up... but two big deer in the freezer and 30mph sustained winds with 50mpg are gonna keep me in this morning

I may sneak out for a ground sit the last few hours behind my house and zap one of the doe I see there almost every night

Shane ... you’re a wonderful young man... you will always have a place to hunt in NY if you ever want to come out and hunt dink’s lol

Most importantly, you will ALWAYS have thousands of brothers and sisters in the hunting family you belong to and fit in 100%

I'm up and out. Sitting here waiting for the rain to start. Hoping something moves before the deluge.

Up in the stand in O-H-I-O. It rained all night so maybe the deer will be on their feet this morning. Saw 10 yesterday but only one small buck. Good luck to everyone out today. Be safe!

    Perfect conditions Jim!
Tony, not so much. I would go right back to sleep with those winds.
I'm getting ready for work, final week, then it's my turn. Good luck out there

Let's go! Drizzly but not terribly cold. SE wind is a bit odd but whatever it's nice 5th. Good luck and be safe. Enjoy the day for whatever it turns out to be, hopefully some dead deer!
