I'm making a ton of breaded venison steaks to take on rutcation. They're so damn good, I can't stop eating them before I shrink and freeze them. Wow!
I don't know about you guys, but I hunt just as much for the meat nowadays, as I do for the hunt itself. I need my venison!

You make the stuff yourself? I just started taking ground meat to a shop a couple years ago. They're great at what they do, but it cost me a small fortune. Still worth it though. I also share a lot with my family, friends, coworkers, etc.. They love it
I had sticks, hot sticks, summer sausage, Italian sausage and breakfast sausage made

Shane, you're in high school and you have shot bigger bucks than some of the guys on here have ever seen. I'm not doggin you here, but hear me out. I enjoy your drive and dedication to the sport. These days may be "the good old days". I hope you take the time to enjoy the whole process. Hanging stands, shooting your bow, cutting shooting lanes, making a great shot, tracking each deer....etc. it's the moments you'll never forget. My biggest hope is you have someone(s) to share the time with - a brother, sister, friend, father, aunt or uncle. This past weekend when I found my buck in Wisconsin with my best friend there...well that's why I hunt. I'm headed back this weekend with Eric and my brother. I cant shoot another buck, but I'm there for the memories. I'll be just as happy when/if they get a deer as I was last weekend. It wasn't the biggest buck. It seems to me hunters have become so caught up in trail camera pics and wont shoot or be happy with anything less...and that's a shame. We compare our buck to what we see on social media...not fair. When hunting becomes a chore, we've lost the point. Go out and enjoy the sunrise, the sunset, seeing nature interact in a way only a deer hunter gets to, make memories with loved ones, and if you're lucky enough to shoot a deer, well that's a bonus.

I am by no means saying you don't do this already. I think you get hit on this forum too much, like today for example. But, you're in high school. In 30 years you'll look back and wish you knew then what you know now. That's not how it works. Wisdom is earned and learned.

Slow down - not just while driving, but in life. Enjoy each day and make it the best you can. Say no to drugs. Shoot your bow often. Shoot whatever deer makes you happy. Don't compare what you shoot to what's on social media.

Just some random thoughts from a 44 year old guy that sent a thank you text to a kind farmer that is generous enough to let me hunt on a beautiful piece of land.

One of the main reasons I hunt. My family of 6 really like venison. And it’s nice that I don’t have to buy much other meat from the store. Still waiting to get my first deer this year. It’ll happen eventually

    Well said man!

I'd give ANYTHING to be 18 again just to be in the woods with my old man when he was in his prime. Didn't seem like it at the time but hearing tell me to "Pick your damn feet up" or "What the hell are you doing?" while I was sleeping on the ground at 10:30 opening morning, or seeing the excitement on his face after he had a good morning of action, were the greatest times and memories.

I rarely buy meat either. The sad thing is, that my spots are 4 and 6 hours away. If I figured what it costs me between, gas, hotels, food, missed work etc.., I could buy 2 angus cows and have them butchered! (but that would be no fun)

Im just dabbling but i cant afford the small fortune that everyone eats in 2 seconds lol. So at least making the stuff only costs me a kit and some elbow grease and everyone still eats it just as quickly!

Isn't that the truth. I'd give about anything to hunt one more time with my father.

I never had many good old days shared with family. I am pretty much self taught, no one wanted it as much as I did. my dad was done with hunting (due to work) by the time I was old enough. all I got to do was hear the stories. my dad is gone now, boy what I would do to go hunting with him just one time. don't get me wrong I had a lot of good old days with friends. but now I'm prepping the best I can before my son is old enough to hunt so he can be successful and get to have some exciting hunts with his dad. I'm hoping we will have many years of hunting together before I get too old. these will be my new good old days coming!
