Just had a doe and dawn come by at 10 yds, 5 min. later a little spike followed the same path...that’s a good sign that they are on their feet this early. Hopefully one of my shooters does the same thing...

Got out late so I talked the grands into watching the boys and the wife into sitting with me in the buddy stand. Deer or no deer I'm enjoying this sit.[IMG]

Had a long day at work today and my phone died last night and I had to get to bed for work but quick update on my evening hunt because it was really cool. Me and 2 buddies decided to drive an hour south to check out some public that I have never hunted before. Going in with nothing but On-X and a little intel from the one guy who has hunted it a couple times. I head to what looks like might be some bedding. The sign is hot and everywhere. I get too close and bump 2 does. Decide to back out and back track. Couldn’t find what said “I’m your tree” so I decided to just set up on a trail next to some thickets where I had an observation post see pic below. There was ag but most of it was standing beans. My buddy manage to find a private cut corn field about 600 yds to my north and he set up on the public just off that. Being where I was I immediately started seeing deer. Around 430 a fawn came by. Then a couple dink bucks. Then this decent 3 year old came by maybe 120 ish just out of range. 7D246776-C6ED-48B5-B581-FB5376C12E06.jpeg
So I started seeing deer travel through the grass in the distance. I was glad I decided to set up observation. All the sudden as the sun started going down I look up and see a huge body. He was far 150 ish yards. He raises his head up and it was officially the biggest 8 I’ve laid eyes on in real life. Guessing 150 class. I just couldn’t get any good pics that far on my phone. He fed out into the grass. What he and others that followed were feeding on I still want to know. Then the parade began. Another even bigger buck followed by two more nice ones and finally a 3rd straggler. They fed until the 2 smaller bucks started going at it. Not trying to kill each other but it went on for at least 20-25 min and they started playing rough. The 2 big dogs watched very unamused. They all finally disappeared headed straight for that cut corn but it was getting dark too fast. My buddy that was by the corn harvested a doe and he was getting her moved out which spooked the bucks right back into the thicket they were bedded at. Was a great night and I learned where these bucks were bedded as I watched 2 of them stand up. So goes to show sometimes, if hunting unfarmiliar territory, sacrificing an observation sit can teach you a lot. I now have a rough idea of how the deer in this particular area may use the land. Of course conditions and all other variables considered. I put a pic below of the big 8 but quit trying to take pics and just watched through my Binos. Can you see him? Lol that was at 170 yds

This one below has bucks in it. Times like these make you wish you owned a good camera

What a great day... thanks to Mudshark (Chris) for inviting me out to hunt with him in PA today ... Only hunted PA this morning as I was on 2 hours of sleep and I hunted behind my house tonight... in PA I saw a few fawns and a fisher! Only the second one I’ve ever seen in the wild..

Drive the 2 hours home and quickly went behind my house and climbed a tree... through the night I saw 7 deer but couldn’t get a shot...

All in all a great day with a great friend and some pretty cool encounters

I went ahead and used my beehive smoker tonight just to keep those thirsty bloodsuckers at bay. It's somewhat helping

What part of the country? You may need to learn about "declanation"...its the difference between compass north and true north (or map north).

No dice tonight. Had multiple opportunities to kill that doe at close range just hate to shoot a doe that still has a fawn with her. Another 2 weeks and I might feel different, I’m starting to get the itch to kill something real bad but trying real hard to hold out for the big boy.

Just because a doe comes in alone doesn't mean they don't have a fawn.

I'd say 95% of the does have fawns, lots of orphans out there every year yet the herd survives.

    To quote @Shane0709

"Sometimes you have to take them heart strings off, clip them on a roach and let one fly...... high".

Ok, might have made that one up, but dammit, it sounded good

I ended up going home. It was getting really warm again and a full moon, I just felt I wouldn't have much luck at all tonight and tomorrow. Going back to work and saving the days off for some better times. Can't believe I could have killed a bruiser 8 if he was 5-10 yards closer, still haunting me.
Pretty sure this was the buck I shot just under, last year, in the same exact spot. But he put on some inches and he's still gonna be in the area, I'll be back!
    Good luck all
