Now that it's past New Year's, our boys hockey practices are starting back up, along with games. We're back to being busy. I'm still going to try and squeeze in hunts when I can. Good Luck, English and anyone else still at it!!
Okay. I know I said I was giving up on my home spot, but I changed my mind. I had vacation scheduled for yesterday to take advantage of the full moon but yesterday was too cold for me so I went to work. The temps today were supposed to be much warmer so I decided to go ahead and take today off and hunt. Good call. Deer number 10 for the season and buck number 4 is lying dead 30 yards away. He's a little guy but once again I'm happy.
Only seen a coyote so far. It’s been snowing for about 10 min and this is the only thing keeping me going (and coffee)
Well, it's 9:45 and I suppose I should climb down and figure out how to take care of this deer by myself with a broken foot. Shouldn't be too difficult. I only have to drag him about 10 yards downhill to the clearing. If my tractor will start this will be very easy. If not I can use my four wheeler to drag him up to the house. I'll post a pic of him when I get to him.
No worries there. My kills are spread over three states and we have enough deer here that the limit is three per day. I couldn't knock a dent in the deer herd here even if I tried.
Just a doe at 50yds for me. Warming up at the car and then will be doing a little coyote hunting until 2ish.
Okay, so I'm a little embarrassed to post a pic of this little dink 5 point, especially since I forgot to take a pic until after I'd gutted him, drove him up to the house with the tractor and rinsed him off. He's actually hanging on the bucket on front of the tractor in this pic. Not very glamorous, but I had to at least post one pic. I've been hunting hard since my buck kill on December 3rd . Not for another deer for me, but for one to give to a friend of mine who hasn't even gotten a shot this season. I told my wife last night that I was going to shoot the first deer that walked by, give it to him and that would be it for my season. Sure, I could have filled a cooler with some of the processed venison I have in the freezer, but I wanted to avoid that if possible. I still have other friends at St. Jude who don't hunt that I've promised some to also. Anyway, this little guy showed up right at first light and I decided to end my season. I didn't even take my hunting clothes off to gut him. I took everything off after that nasty task and now it's in the washer. When it's done I'll pack it away until next year. Well, except for the wool layers that I'll use for bass fishing once the ice on the lakes here melts. So that's it for the 2017-2018 deer season for me. Ten deer total. Six bow kills and four gun kills. Four bucks and six does. Five killed in Kentucky, two killed in Missouri and three killed here at my home spot in Tennessee. Good luck to anyone who is still out there chasing them.
Grace and James both out today. Grace got it done 20 min in the blind. She is 12 and this is her second deer. BB at 20 yds. Soooo, proud of her. James missed yesterday but he’s in the shooter’s seat now with plenty of time left on our last hunt! Sooo proud of him for sticking it out Monday and Tuesday in these frigid temps.
