Gonna be a wild afternoon tomorrow. Supposed to drop from around 40 degrees to 20 degrees between 1pm and 5pm. Maybe that will get a buck on his feet to feed early. Ill be there waiting....and freezing my butt off.
Yes my son and I came down for second shotgun. Headed home today he has to be back for school tomorrow. Saw a bunch of deer last night but no mature bucks.
For anyone even thinking of hunting Iowa or just wishing you could...do It! It is incredible. I give up a lot of other things just so I can hunt here.
Zicam, thera flu, chicken noodle soup and a couple days of rest I'm back in the saddle this afternoon. Wife even gave me the ok
Don’t know what you are talking about... there are no deer in Iowa... Seriously though it is a great state to hunt in but gotta Jump through a few hoops to make it happen. There seasons really cater to bowhunters. October 1st through usually first weekend in December when 1st shotgun opens. Even if you don’t have the money to spend on an outfitter, there is a lot of good public land around. I’m talking thousands of acres. But they do allow deer drives during shotgun seasons so it can be hit or miss. But bow season is usually very doable on public land with a little scouting or local help... how has the recovery from the ehd been. every time we think about going out there is some report about ehd that keeps us from applying. we have hunted public lands near Unionville.
Guessing you are talking about unionville iowa and not Missouri, both fairly close together... in my area in SE Iowa some places were hit hard others not so much. As far as recovering I have seen a lot, more so than previous years, of great caliber bucks taken in Iowa this year. Even if you go as far as including west central Illinois and northeast Missouri, all right in my area, just seems like a really good year for big bucks hitting the dirt. This was probably one of my best seasons as far as deer sightings go, been hunting the same lease going on six years now, and the 3rd/4th seasons were a little rough, and slow, but the last 2 have been good to this one being great... You may have said it already bit do you do public or use an outfitter? Have you bow hunted Iowa in late Oct or early nov?
I have only hunted second shotgun season so far but will be hunting late muzzleloader next year. I hunt with friends of mine that run limited amounts of hunts. My son has hunted Iowa twice now, both times with Fletch.
