IMG_2029.JPG Not much left of that fellow now. I suppose I could have picked another half pound or so off but it's almost 70 degrees now and I was in a hurry.

Can’t wait till the CT late season opens dec 23rd. I plan on spending a few days out there at least, hunting and scouting for next year!

Okay. So, while I'm very happy with the buck I killed this morning I was a little disappointed in the ground shrinkage. If he had been a big bodied buck it would have been a different story, but his body was about the size of a mature (but not huge) doe. I don't really care about that, though. I'm still jazzed.

I got extremely lucky on the shot. He was quartering away and the shot was back like I said, but the shot was WAY back. There was no liver or lung. It was pure gut shot. The only thing that saved me was the fact that he was at 10 yards and the Slick Trick cut the aortic artery on the entry side. I just screwed up the shot

That was one messy field dress. I think I did three separate "I think I'm gonna puke" wretches while gutting him.

I came up with a new idea, though. I got him gutted and used the four wheeler to drag him to the house. Then I just left the drag strap on him, slipped the loop of the drag strap over the hay spear on my tractor, lifted him up, drove to the water hose and washed him out really good. The tenderloins didn't smell bad but I don't want them out of a gut shot deer. They went into the dog food grind pile.

    It is a great day!

Thats how I do it too.. Depending on if I can easily get them out without field dressing them, I gut them that way too.

I'm sure that's a good idea if they're hit good, but I can't imagine all of that gut content splashing out. :)

Dead deer, just a matter of finding him. With the shock created by a slug, I would put money he won't be much further

Not very. I missed it. Maybe 30 yds. Have tracked him maybe 300 yrs total, just found another pile of blood. Then it disappears again.

Betting he is stopping as his lung fills up and he has to cough it up.

Surprised he has made it that far, broadhead I could see but the shock of a slug is devastating to the vitals. Initial blood appeared to be muscle as he filled up, guessing after recovery you will find the slug still in him at the hide and no exit.

Looks and sounds like those piles of blood is where he bedded and got jumped. Might be tough to pick up blood again once he got up and ram but I'm pretty sure he's dead. Best of luck. Let us know
