I try every year but have yet to kill a decent buck late season. I hunt from Oct 1st till mid Jan when our season goes out. I got close a couple of years ago but it was sub zero and snowing.. had a nice buck come by and I couldnt get my bow back fast enough being so cold.. I got busted mid sky draw
A good hunting memory of mine is from around 2000, and we got a really good snow and the wind was whipping. I decided to go to public ground and stalk figuring I would be the only one insane enough to be out there. I was. Anyway, the plan was to target a big stand of cedars I thought would be a good wind break that had a creek nearby. Looking back...my approach sucked and I got busted by about 15 does right where I thought they would be, but damn that was fun. Remember it like yesterday. First time I had ever seen that many deer in one spot.
Last year I went out on December 15th. Got a rare afternoon to hunt. 15 degrees. Winds blowing 20 mph. I thought what the heck am I doing. 15 minute before sundown 10 doe come plowing down 40 yards from me........big buck following and grunting. I couldn't believe it. Got within 50 yards of him. Was fantastic.
Hoping some of these hand written letters to land owners asking for permission pay off! Looking to get some more land in NJ!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Will do, I wrote and sent out 6 letters today, my hand is cramping so I’ll stop for now lol Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I tried this a few years back. The guy got the letter, forgot to respond and put it in his hunting bag. He found it 2 years later and actually called me. I couldn’t get permission to hunt but did get permission to retrieve a deer if it goes into their property. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Deer processing day 3. I swear here and now I will never triple again unless I'm planning to donate one or two of them or give some away. All that's left now is to grind tomorrow. We just spent almost four hours deboning, cutting and trimming hind quarters and shoulders from the buck and the doe. It would have taken a lot longer if we had cut steaks, but we didn't cut any steaks out of the hindquarters. We vacuum sealed the major round cuts whole for either jerky or steaks later and put those in the freezer. After each hindquarter and front shoulder (four of each - I had already processed the fawn) we put the grind meat in doubled plastic grocery bags, tied them off and put them back in the fridge quickly so it didn't get warm. Now I estimate we have around 40 to 50 pounds (it may be more) of meat to grind tomorrow between the lean ground for us and the trim ground for our dog pack. Killing the deer was a blast. Drinking beer and texting everyone I know was a blast. Skinning, quartering and processing them? Real work and well worth it, but I will never set us up to have to do this much at one time again. I intend to weigh EVERYTHING I took off of those deer when we are finished. I have to add that my wife Beth is a real trooper. I'm sure she has an abscessed tooth and she is in a lot of pain but she still kept up with me doing the front shoulders. She is an amazing woman.
You won't believe this but it's true. I walked away from the computer after I posted that last post and my wife sat down and read it. When I walked back into the kitchen she told me that she had read what I posted. She said that the last paragraph was nice but I still wasn't getting any tonight! All I could do was laugh. She is something else.
It’s my daughters 8th bday and she wanted to go hunting with me. So we are in the blind with the muzzleloader. Good Luck to those that are out Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Set up waiting on daylight, bumped doe and 2 fawns on the way in . Man I hate when that happens. Good luck to the guys in the woods this morning. The rest of you have a good day at work .
Good Luck everyone! Headed home from Indianapolis, should be in the stand this afternoon! Sent from my SM-N900V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
