Live in Dallas but hunt Clarke and a little in Decatur

So that brings me back to where he was at 6 yards. While he is standing there, I hear a thud. I look down and there is my iPhone laying just a couple yards from the buck that I am about to draw on. He was so distracted from chasing he just picked his head up and kept chasing. I couldn't shoot him that close because he was quartering hard at a steep angle. I didn't feel comfortable with it so I let him go, unsure if I was going g to get another opportunity. So he circled back and chases the doe. I am shooting a single pin sight that is moveable. I had it set at 20. Now I'm at full draw with my sight at 20 and the deer nearing 40. He was just about to run after the doe into the brush not to be seen again, and I made a "mehhh" noise. The fist time he didn't flinch. So I did it again. It peeked his curiosity but he kept chasing. Finally, I did it a third time and he stopped dead in his tracks at 37 yards. I held my 20 yard pin over his back and drilled him.

I thought to myself "yes perfect shot".

Well then he turned and ran away from the tree, and all I see is 90 of my arrow sticking out on the side I shot him.

Immediately my heart sank. I thought I hit him in the shoulder blade. So I went back to the house and talked it over with a buddy of mine (who has 60 years on me).

We decided to tread lightly and just look for blood at impact.

So 2 hours later we walk into the spot and search around where I thought I shot him at.

Not a speck.

I knew I wasn't going to find him after what I saw and then now this.

So u began to knock myself for my mistake. I started wandering aimlessly looking for blood, all the while regretting what I thought was a pinwheel broadside shot.

So about 60 yards later I saw red and I thought I was hallucinating. I look, and I could see a red line all the way up the wooded ridge where he ran. And I mean a solid, thick, blood spattered line of gore. I went from the saddest guy in Illinois to the happiest.

I screamed (probably like a little girl) and started running up the trail with enthusiasm. My old friend followed at a much slower rate, still in shock.

150 yards later, there laid my beautiful, mature, heart-shot buck.

He ended up dying out in the wide open in my friends foodplot, right next door.

I was over the moon. He was just what I had been looking for. We are guessing that he is a 4 year old, 140ish but frankly I don't care.

It's only October and I have been blessed enough to tag out in Illinois. It's been a hell of a season so far. Hunting hard paid off more than anything. Now it's on to Wisconsin for whitetail and Montana as well.

I sincerely hope everyone had a great weekend in the woods, and I wish you all the best out there, as always.

Been following today, what a roller coaster of track jobs. Wow
Sorry to those who didn't recover.

I ended up seeing a doe and a 2 year old 8 pt.
The buck had a big body, weak rack, and almost got himself shot at 20 yards broadside!

He came by my apple trees checking for does. After ripping up a sapling for about 3 mins he continued on down the trail I had just taken with his nose in the air. About 10 minutes later I hear him chasing a deer away from my stand.

After cursing his name for the next half hour for chasing my does around. I hear a noise to my left, It sounds like a deer snorting but i couldn't really tell. Then two yearlings start coming my way. I get ready for momma doe to appear but she doesn't show. This had me pretty confused because I've seen this group before and momma is always right with them.
After watching the two young ones playing for a minute, momma goes sprinting by about 50 yards away with a mature 8 point chasing hard after her. She was trying to lead him away from the little ones who were oblivious to the whole ordeal.

After chasing her for a half hour, and realizing he cannot catch the doe the buck heads back to the fawns and stands between them and their mom, he wouldn't let her get to them without passing him first. The doe is snorting and stomping and trying to get back to her fawns who are just meandering around completely clueless.

It is at this point that my neighbors son(about 11) lets his dogs out to the bathroom. They hear all the commotion and decide to investigate, the two fawns catch a whiff of them and go sprinting back to momma with the buck in tow. At this point I reach for my grunt tube and start challenging the buck, he stops in his tracks and starts looking back for this intruder. At that point the dogs start freaking out, they are on a electric fence which ends about 30 yards from my stand. Once they start sounding off all the deer make a break for it. The kid goes back to his mom and is like "there is a hunter up in that tree and he isn't moving!" "Is he okay?"

After letting my neighbors know that it was me, I still had about an hour & 1/2 of daylight. The dogs are outside a lot and the deer are pretty used to them so I said screw it and stayed out there. Once again another buck starts making his way towards my tree(which always sets the squirrels off) and once again those darn dogs come back there again. Freaking out. After talking to the dogs they finally shut up and I was left with about 15 mins of daylight. Just as I am lowering my bow down I can hear a deer milling around behind me. Unfortunately it was too dark to see and once I got up it blew at me and took off.

I usually do not have this many deer around me at one time, so even though I did not seal the deal, i still had an awesome hunt! I will definitely try to be out Monday morning. Hopefully I can stick that 8 pointer.

I'm up. Turned off last alarm and just layed there. 15 minutes went by and I thought back to a comment on BHOD a few seasons ago. Thought to myself, WWGD(what would Graff do), remembering an episode where he said Oct. 29th was his favorite day to be on stand.

Chdcked the weather in J'ville, 24 degrees with a south wind at 3mph.

Will be hitting the road shortly.
