I didn't kill a buck this season, but here's a list of the reasons I had one of my very best seasons ever. Found only my second shed ever Feb. 1st. Got to watch my target buck tend a doe at 20 yrds. (No clear shot) He was the only deer I would have shot. Watched a decent buck bed for 15 mins at 25 yrds. (I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a deer bed down.) Heard grunting during the rut. Let three legal bucks go that were easy shots. (one that fed right under me three nights in a row!) Let numerous doe walk that were easy shots. (I won't shoot a doe) Saw roughly 9 bucks during the rut. (mostly small scrub bucks) Saw an owl. I've only ever seen two in my life. (heard them many times) Saw a red squirrel two times. (They're very rare in my woods.) Other than killing my target buck (here he is yet again ), I don't know how it could have been better.
Yah I didn't even bother today. I went on errands and talked to a few guys with my complaint. Tons of activity, zero in daylight. I have to say I do not understand other than the moon, for there has not been pressure since opening weekend
Had 5 doe come through over the course of an hour or so followed by a small buck. As I was packing up I had a deer shadow walking in. Camera revealed it was a small 9 pt. Fun hunt. Gotta keep the grind going.
I may not be hunting but my body now says, hey its 4 a.m. get out of bed. 45 mins later, dogs fed and pottied, a lunch made and packed, load of laundry done, dishes cleaned up and sipping hot coffee typing this. It could be a productive morning with a mid day bow hunt ,snows on the way again.
It’s been a great morning. I’ve seen 5 different bucks and watched several of them sparring for at least 10 minutes. I was hoping that them sparring would bring in a mature buck but so far that hasn’t happened. How was your anniversary? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It was great. My daughter planned a surprise gathering with a bunch of life-long group of friends from our old church. It was a great evening. Just a little background on part of this group. In 1975 there were six couples who got married from our youth group. Of the six couples, five made it to 50yrs. I consider that a remarkable achievement. Thanks for asking and good luck today. Puff balls are actually edible when they're still white, before they dry up. I don't care for the flavor and consistency of them though, not near as good as morels or shaggy manes. The pic @early in posted just looks like a clump of mud to me lol. But if it collapsed and shot a cloud into the air it must've been a dried up puff ball.
That's a great achievement and validates the importance of putting God first in your lives. With him all things are possible.
As some of you may know, I was laid off at the end of August and turned 61 on 9/01. I've been applying and interviewing but have only had one offer so I'm still looking. Getting up every day and going hunting has given me purpose, better relationship with God and the opportunity to know what retirement will look like. I know with God his time is not our time, so I know he will open another door for my employment, but it will be in his time.
