Got back home today from my hip replacement. The wife had to drive us home on bad roads. Not sure which was more painful, the surgery or ride home. Lol. Saw a ton of deer out feeding in the cornfields on the way home around midday.
@cantexian What was the outcome of Arkansas considering night time deer hunting earlier this year? Sent from my SM-S916U1 using Tapatalk
I hope you heal up quickly brother. As to the car ride, I know what you mean. About 10 years ago my horse launched me 9 feet in the air and I broke two ribs when I hit the ground. The wife and I both worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and she was driving then. That woman hit every stinking pothole and then when we got on campus she would hit a speed bump and I’d yell in pain. She’d say “Sorry!” And then do the same thing on the other two speed bumps between the gate and the parking garage. She did this three days straight and I said “That’s it. I’m driving.” I couldn’t believe she asked “Why?”
No deer sighted this evening. I was 115 yards from the camera that has captured the big 8. I’ll hunt there in the morning and then the wind should be perfect to sit by the camera. If it isn’t I’ll move 100 yards west to another camera that caught him early season.
Oh, and as long as I’m after this buck I won’t shoot a doe in the evening. Mornings yes, but not evening.
Pretty sure that it failed. If I remember correctly, the push was for private land rights to night hunt in rural areas. People are going to due that regardless if they own land. Basically, just an attempt to remove poaching fines.
I guess I'm a lucky man. My wife has no trouble at all with me hunting from 15 September (Missouri opener) to 28 February (Arkansas close). She also doesn't have a problem with me fishing from 01 March through 14 September. Then again. I have no problem with her hiking all the time, going on her girl hiking trips and anything else she wants to do. This really doesn't have anything to do with your post, but my wife's girl hiking group is planning on going to Ireland in August. I said she should go. She said "we can't afford $4000 for something like that". I said "Yes we can". Money has been tight for us for some time now, but I got my first Social Security check this month. I told her starting next month put $600 into her savings and by August she would have $4200 and if she needed spending money put $700 or $800 a month in savings. Hell, I don't need it. That's why we retired: To enjoy life. She's let me buy a $6000 e-bike and God only knows how much other hunting/fishing equipment. Why shouldn't I let her spend a similar amount to do what she's always dreamed of doing? If it makes her happy I'm all for it. Funny thing is, she feel's the same way about me. Like I said, I'm lucky.
I agree with you. There are a a lot of areas that are overpopulated with deer and the tags are extremely liberal but the deer population keeps growing. The idea of night hunting with thermal imaging optics sounds like a possible solution, but I believe that the core problem is that there are too many hunters that don't like to shoot does, and that's how you reduce a population. Daylight, nighttime with thermal optics,..... Same problem. Guys don't want to shoot does so the night hunting solves nothing.
You are certainly correct about not wanting to shoot does. During the gun permit hunt, I talked with several guys I ran into that only wanted to shoot a buck but complained about the lack of rut activity. Yes, rut activity is low because there are so many does that the bucks do not have to work hard to find one. Personally, I would love to see Arkansas become a one buck state with the option to earn a second buck tag after killing three does. The overall herd would drastically inprove within a couple of years, better balance for a better rut hunt and more bucks making it to maturity.
