I wandered around the state land for a while. Found some decent deer sign and human sign also. Back at the house now if rain holds out I might be out for evening hunt. There was also a ladder stand out there.
Well its stopped raining so I'm gonna get out for the afternoon. Should be in the stand in about 30 minutes. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using Tapatalk
Very sorry to hear this. You take care , I hope it's something a good heating pad and or Epsom soak can help you. Happy Thanks Giving and enjoy the day with a good rest.
I may try a Wednesday afternoon hunt. Temps drop hard and it can be hung and left until after Thanksgiving. Cam had zero activity the last 2 days
Don't feel bad, my cam has shown exactly one doe in the last 5 days. After the last week of October and first two weeks of November my woods turn into a morgue, every season without fail. I have to mention, this is because of a greatly reduced deer population in the state park I hunt. These same woods had a really good population of deer when I first started hunting it 20+ years ago. In fact, it was so good back in the day, you expected to see numerous deer on EVERY hunt, now you hope to see a deer at all. The problem is, back in the late 90's this state park, which is bowhunting only, started having two one day shotgun hunts each year to bring down the high number of deer in the park. That just shows how many deer there were. Within about 10 years they achieved that goal. But, as the years have gone by since then it's gotten to the point where the deer aren't reproducing nearly as fast as they are being killed during these hunts, hence the very low number of deer today. Yet, they continue to have these shotgun hunts!! This situation has been noticed by every single hunter that I've talk to. Most of them actually stopped hunting the park because of it. The really sad aspect of this situation is that once legislation gets passed (the shotgun hunt), it's almost impossible to get it reversed. The main reason I continue to hunt these woods, despite the crappy deer population, is because it's only 25mins from where I live. At 68 years old, that's a big convenience! There are a few good bucks that come through each year, and that's enough to keep me hunting there. I try to keep my glass half full.
Did you ever try some door knocking at some farms that are close by? I know they get a lot of deer damage.
I am back up in Maine. No tags filled in Kansas, but I saw a ton of bucks. I held to my standards and didn’t shoot a buck just to shoot a buck. Last day I had a tank behind me at 1230 in the afternoon, just couldn’t get a shot. Oh well, now back to no deer sightings.
Thanks for the suggestion, but the property owners in my region, especially farm owners, very rarely allow others to hunt, especially strangers. I mean very rarely. I'd spend the rest of my days getting one to grant me permission.
A buddy of mine who has a small cabin in Maine just sent me this pic of a really wide buck taken by a guy not far from him. I think they call them "korkers" up there? I notice he was using what looks like a Remington 760 pump, the rifle Larry Benoit always used.
