Ended up having an awesome morning, saw ten deer, only one close enough for a shot was a fawn of course! Still a beautiful morning to be out

Supposed to rain Thursday through Friday. Might let up late Thursday into Friday morning before raining again Friday afternoon. I'm not going to attempt it in a heavy rain, last thing I need is to slip and fall. If the rain does have a lull may opt for the muzzleloader over shotgun, otherwise will be shotgun.

I don't know about other folks hunting in different areas of the country, but I have noticed that rut activity turns on like a light switch starting around Oct 25th and remains good through the first week of Nov, then drops off significantly there after. This happens every year in my area of SE Pa. Does anyone else notice this same change around these times?

I see that for sure, but I do get some more random bucks cruising this week and next

It's the possibility of seeing the random buck that you mention that keeps me in the woods, but I have stopped my dark to dark hunts. I'll be heading in shortly for the evening though. I'm sooo happy we have finally gotten rid of that non-stop wind we've had for the last two weeks. Good luck to those hitting the woods today!

You're seeing the pre-rut activity where the bucks are beginning to roam and cruise to find the very first does coming into estrous, followed by the chasing/seeking, and the fall off of activity is the dreaded lockdown. Lock down is the absolute worst in areas where the buck to doe ratios are absolutely and completely out of whack. The bucks in those areas don't have to go real far to find their next victim.

I'm kind of taking a little break right now and will start hunting fairly hard at the end of the week again when more deer are roaming to find the last round of mature does as the temps drop and deer will also start to focus on food heavily again. I do also love when the fawns that weigh enough come into estrous in that early to middle of December time frame.

Lots of good hunting left guys!

Appreciate the input. I know what I'm seeing during that time frame, but in my area it doesn't pick back up much at all after that active period. It's only the slight chance of seeing that random buck mentioned earlier that keeps me going in.

Great morning of family and tradition…

It started with my nephew Adam killing this beauty

And then his brother, my other nephew stalked up on doe and shot one.

The tradition of Gun season goes back far in my family and my brother and I were the catalyst to these two young men getting into hunting… I’m so proud of them. The students have surpassed their teachers

No hunt but took a stroll on property to check sign. Nothing new other than scuffed leaves from running and in the oak . Tons of acorn on the ground still. All signs of buck kill gone, save the rib cage which is chewed hard. No cam activity on anything. I did take down the climber seat, need to pull platform next.
God willing I'll be up to hunting Thursday, if weather cooperates.

Changed locations from this morning. Brought the decoy out, if the wind doesn’t knock it over. image.jpg

Same for NJ. Last 10days of October and first week of November. In VT the rut is on fire around November 20th.
