Leave him 18 hours. Will be dead right there by the creek Just went thru this with a buddy, exactly like you described. They recovered the buck 20 hours later and he was still warm and not stiff. It takes awhile for a gut shot deer to die. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
I don't think it will take that long. If you can go back in a few hours and slowly check on him, do it. Are there a bunch of coyotes by you?..if not, maybe check back in am. I posted earlier this season about the time i zipped the belly of a doe open. Her stomach literally fell out. It looked like someone took a bloody mop through the thigh high grass. She did go 150 yards after the stomach came out. She dead.
Yes, @Holt had a buddy with guts hanging the other day. Give it time, it’s a dead deer. Did you see your entry or exit? Did you just graze, I believe Holt’s buddy shot entered back and exited low front yard quartering away.
I thought I missed. I know it deflected off a small branch that was blowing back and forth. That being said I think it just grazed him enough to open up his stomach. He hunched really hard and his tail was curled up under him so I know he’s hurting. Hunting in 30mph winds sucks. I did an all day sit and feel like I’ve been on a fishing boat in the North Atlantic. I’m sitting here in my kitchen and I feel like I’m swaying back and forth. That and I feel sick anyway because that deer is suffering.
Sorry just read the rest of the posts, time is on your side. Also I’d recommend a good track dog for recovery, small price to pay for the ease of it. If it’s dead, that dog will run to it.
I have Shock, it was an 80 yard shot on a doe, she stepped after I shot so the shot was back, practically gutted her right there, she went about 80-100 yds and laid down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think that’s my plan. I may even just go into work at 3 am to take my mind off it and leave early. If I got out there at say noon that would be 18 hrs as @Holt suggested.
Tomorrow will be a week since injuring my wrist. Wasn't planningnon hunting this coming weekend unless I was off without requesting it. Week after is 1st firearm season, thwn turkwy day weekend, then 2nd firearm season first weekend of December. Wrist is feeling good, still really sore on the broken side and limited movememt as a result. I'm liking my chances of getting out for one of them, Thanksgiving weekend being the most likely earliest. With the shotgun or muzzleloader I can be a little more picky for terrain for recovery. .44 mag handgun is no bueno this year
Any more pics of this? I'd be surprised if it gets the typical record. From this angle his G2's look like a decent deduction. Angles matter though
Are you allowed only ML or shotgun, or are straight wall cartridges allowed? I can’t recall which state allows these now…
Can use certain straight walls in rifles now, single shot yada... yada. I'd have to borrow one to use one, couldn't justify a new purchase.
I definitely think my main spots have been over pressured the lst couple of days with this permit gun hunt. It is the first time I have drawn it and I was shocked by the number of people and shots I heard on Saturday. I think the dry lake bed complicates things. It has become a sanctuary for the deer that live near the shorelines. Goingto try a different spot starting midmorning tomorrow. First, I have to attend the Veteran’s Day ceremony at my son’s school. My 8 year old as selected to be a part of the ceremonial flag folding.
