The one time I have had vultures on a deer before I recovered it, that was the case. I found the deer an hour after daylight after leaving it over night, they were in all the trees within 20 yards around it.

If that is him they went to they were much farther away than 20 yards.

It just seems too coincidental to have that many vultures roosted around the tree I shot him out of. When I’ve never seen them roost here before.

Anyway I’m going to sit until 9;30. Maybe a doe will walk by. I really want to sit until the thermals are rising good and see if any of the buzzards circle.

If it’s him he’s not going anywhere and he isn’t going to be less dead.

I do think a large diameter tree that's been rubbed has a much better chance that it was done by a larger buck than a small buck.

Forced to sit today out because of heavy rain and wind. I hate losing a day during the rut because of foul weather! They're talking about the rain ending today, but sustained winds tomorrow of 20-30mph, with higher gusts possible. I'm curious who would hunt in those kinds of winds?

Yes, they definitely roost directly over top the kill. Have found many deer that way

Alarm set for 4am, tomorrow and Saturday. Have to switch it to 3am for Sunday forward. Hate when DST ends, needs to be permanent

Don't forget to adjust your phone alarm an hour earlier starting Sunday

I’m out, nothing here. The activity seems really slow around here right now. Heading up to the property this afternoon

Didn't see a deer this morning. Rain has driven me out. Be back out around 1 for a few hours.

DST is a major issue when it comes to doing an early morning hunt. I have to get up at 4:00am to be in the woods a half an hour before first light (eat & travel time). That's rough!

It's raining harder than I've seen it rain in a very long time. We need it, but damn, it's really pouring! I can't imagine deer moving at all during this kind of rain. Maybe good this evening if it stops soon enough.

Well, I walked the way that they flew but never found anything. It didn't occur to me to look over where they were roosted, but we looked that all over the first morning. No way was he there. I guess it was just coincidence.

Twenty minutes before I got down I saw does coming in. They angled towards me and were going past at 20 yards. I drew and when the lead doe got to an opening I gave a soft whistle. Not really a whistle as much as a combination of a whistle and a whisper, which has always worked in the past. This time it scared the crap out of them and they bounced out to 40 in cover.

After looking for the buck I my gear and had just gotten on my bike when I got a notification from my Reveal XB camera overlooking a double scrape in another location. Can't tell how big he is but he looks like one I would shoot. I requested HD video to check him out better. That's the second buck to daylight on those scrapes in as many days.

I think a move is in order, but it would mean giving up on recovering the buck I shot two days ago.

I would hunt in the wind, depending upon the tree. Good day for ground and pound

    Suck it up buddy!

The trick is to make yourself go to bed at 8:00 pm at the latest. (Says the guy who can never do that.)
