The antibiotics are beginning to work and for the first time in two weeks I feel halfway decent. I'm glad because I only have 8 days until the season opens here. I still had a whole quartered/boned out doe that I vacuum sealed and froze in the freezer for future processing. I just never got around to processing it. I just gave it to the neighbor who I'm helping with building his house. Well, I mentioned it being there and his wife said "We'll take it if you don't want it.!" I let them have it because between the two pigs an the bass fillets I need more room. I still have some processed venison as well. Also, I'm about to be putting more venison in the freezer.
Absolutely raining acorns around me for 100 yards. Deer trails all over, cold stream running under my tree. This should be good. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Nothing great from me. Just a lone velvet spike came by. Get out to the truck and the guy that parked next to me shot a 10 pt. I didnt get to see it. Then a friend that i got into hunting public shot his first public land buck, full velvet 7 pt. Then another guy in the next lot killed a freaky non typical in full velvet. Lots of buck hit the ground this evening. I dont want to share to many pics with out permission. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Was really hot at elk camp this weekend. I never hunted up higher where I have phone service. We stayed down low Saturday morning and hunted cool draws with small creeks on a big North facing slope behind camp. There wasn't really a lot of fresh elk sign in there though, although there was a ton of deer sign. After seeing the lack of elk sign where we went Saturday morning, I moved up a bit higher on the hillside for the Saturday evening hunt. I rode the atv up and around to access a logging road that cuts through the slope about 3/4 of the way up. It was hot and I wasn't expecting movement until maybe the last hour of light. I followed some trails and did some soft calling but heard/saw nothing. About the last 10 minutes of light I was making my way back towards the atv, walking an old logging road. I heard some popping and cracking below the road and stopped and nocked an arrow. A couple minutes later a spike walked out in front of me. I already had the rangefinders in my hand and zapped him, 55 yards. I was kneeling and he didn't appear to notice me. I flipped open the fixed pin portion of my sight and dialed my mover to 55 and then drew back. He was slightly quartering away. I got the pin settled on him, checked the bubble, and then squeezed off the shot. The arrow was arcing towards him perfectly and looked great, but then at what seemed like the arrow being halfway to him he reacted to the shot and started to spin away and dropped his hind end to load up to run. I watched in horror thinking I was about to hit him right in a back ham. He dropped enough that my arrow grazed over the top of his flank and left a little puff of hair hanging in the air. He ran maybe 15 yards and stopped, looked around like "what the heck was that!", then simply turned and walked up the hillside into the timber. He didn't even act all that spooked. The arrow showed a bit of hair stuck in the broadhead and zero meat or any blood on it or the shaft. Just gave him a shave, thank goodness it didn't turn into an elk running around with an arrow sticking out of his rump. While I know it happens, it is pretty rare. That is the first elk I've ever shot at that reacted to the shot noise. But it is also the farthest shot I've ever taken at one too.
Saturday is coming up. Plans are to hunt only early mornimgs due to temps, bees and flies. Yah, I know late afternoon means a cool down and fewer bugs. This said, I process our deer. I know I would be too exausted to drag, load , hang, skin, and quarter at night. My hands make everything take way longer than it use to. To all that...we all know, I can't shoot a doe to save my life, so kinda moot issue...lol
3 1/2 hours of work, then I will be on stand. I will say, this should be a very interesting hunt with lots of action. Stay tuned! Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Hey Adam, Im working on the "Family Farm" for the next 3 months, so if your down here in MD Im right next door if you need a hand with a deer or want to go get lunch. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Im up! This is so ridiculous. Im only 50 yards from my truck and the house i parked at. But the owner said thin the deer out. So here I am. Got in a nasty twisted walnut tree in his yard. And only 15 yards from his barn. This will be a weird one for me. But that 50 yard walk was very nice, compared to my normal mile plus walks, haha Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Haha, first deer at 15 yards. Cant tell what it is, standing under a bush. Time to start killing! Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
