Back in the woods. Hunting the edge of a currently dry creek bed about 100 yards below the spring and like 80 from the edge of the clearing. Wind seems to be blowing my scent into the rhododendron thicket that lines the creek bed. Seems like a good spot, several soft edges come together here and I've seen a lot of deer in the general area. It's buck or bear only for me tonight unless a doe gets herself in a spot where I think she's gonna start raising hell about me being here.
I heard owls being vocal last week when I got to my spot. Ten mins after I got settled in, I saw one perch in a tree about 20' away. That's only the second time I've actually seen one. I hear them often, which I love, but almost never see them.
Dunstun and chinese. The Dunstun are the only ones that are producing right now. I bought them as whips many years ago and they produce great some are still young in size but I have 4 in the upper plot loaded and 3 in the bottom as well. The bottom plot has 10 or 11 and the upper plot has 6. I have a nieghbor down the hill that also has chestnuts. Not sure what those are but they have been dropping chestnuts for at least 20yrs that I know of with no blight.
I’m set up in a brand new spot. I’ve seen deer go here and come from here but I’ve never walked down here. I should have. It’s a beautiful spot. I may not see anything but it’ll be nice just sitting here.
I just walked three miles and only saw one rub. This dryness and heat has these deer locked down right now.
