Deer in the alfalfa and close to line a big single doe and what I think was a 4 pt. They came in at the old woods coop blind. Garden peppers cover from a heavy frost due in morning.

My target buck never showed up but seen about twelve does, the big seven with kickers off his G two, he is mature but holding out for now but didn’t have a shot on him anyways. Seen a spike and a hundred inch eight point. Was a good sit. Hopefully be back out in the next couple days

Okay, I have a question for everyone.

Well first, Greg saw three does. The two younger ones were about to give him a shot but before he could make it happen the big girl worked her way around downwind in the cover. Game over.

I got winded from a direction I could only see 20 yards. Now here's what happened that's making me ask a question:

About 20-25 minutes before first light I heard what I thought was a bark. Not a big dog bark, but like my little ankle biter Pomchi Dizzy would make. Lets see if I can explain this: It sounded like what Dizzy would sound like from the house a half mile away but it was coming from about 35 yards away on the other side of a big downed tree. It sounded kind of between what I described and a squeak. I sat for the longest time wondering what in the world? Every so often I would hear a sound like a stomp or walnut hitting the ground. I would also hear rustling.

I ended up getting down about four minutes early. I came down quietly and started sneaking out without turning my light on. I knew it was still there because I could hear it. I bent over and took quick, light double steps to try (probably hilariously) to sound like a deer. I continued until I figured I'd be able to see what it was. I stood up, lit it up with my head lamp and it was a really good buck. Of course, it didn't hang around long after I lit him up.

My question is, of course, what in the world was the squeaky bark sound? Maybe he was rubbing a tree that was against a limb of the downed tree and it was squeaking? Could his antlers make this sound on a tree? I had no idea what it was at the time and now that I know it was a buck I would like to know how in the world he was making that sound.

That’s exactly why I don’t hunt MO, you got some wild stuff haha….Maybe just tines on wet bark, who knows. I was thinking it was a fox bark until you said you saw the buck.

I do what I can to keep you young folk entertained.

Seriously though, it was behind me so I was standing there forever thinking what in the world is going to come out from behind this treetop?

I've never heard that sound in the woods before.

It definitely wasn't wet bark. It's very dry here.

You're correct though. Weird stuff happens here sometimes. I'm going to the same tree in the morning. When I get down the first thing I'm going to do is walk around that treetop and see what the heck was going on.

That is strange. I have heard it before around here but i know what it is. We have a very small population of fallow deer here and they will bark when frightened.

But my guess is that the buck was bedded in the tree top and fox walked up on him. It scared him and he let out a little bark when he ran away.

First off that is awesome a big buck was right there and second, this is probably why the buck sounded like that...

Many years ago, what is still probably the biggest buck I've ever seen made a "weird" sound. 5 minutes before 1st light I hear what sounds like someone hitting a bat against a tree. Im talking extremely loud and within 50 yds of me in the silent woods. It got so loud I was getting ticked another hunter was climbing a tree like a moron. Right at 1st light I see this mega giant for my area angling away at 40 yds. I grunted at him and he came right in chest on to 25 yds. Stops, says yeah that aint no real buck, turns around and walks off. Anyway hahaha, even when I was deer hunting and should have known that a loud sound like that probably meant a buck fight, I thought it was someone hitting a tree. Thats because that is only 1 of 2 buck fights Ive ever heard or seen so my brain didn't even imagine what it was...same may be for your encounter. May be as simply as an antler scratching a piece of dry wood....

I encountered that sound last season. It was a buck sneezing.

Squirrels have been the only thing keeping me alert on stand during my last 8 deerless sits. I'm at the point where I actually had a dream the other night that I saw a doe from my stand. When you have to dream about seeing a deer, you know things are bad.
