Last night, my oldests and I sat about 60 yards apart on opposite sides of a thicket with dropping white oaks in it. There is a lake shore that creates a funnel on the south side of the thicket, forcing the deer to travel east-west along the shoreline. He was on the west side in a dropping white oak with his climber. I sat on the east side with my 8 year old and the crossbow, hoping o get him his first deer. Nothing happened until about 6:30 when I heard Easton shoot and then say “Oh Crap” he thought he missed. The doe ran west, and stopped behind some bushes 30 yards away. Thinking he had missed, I positioned my 8 year old to shoot it. We watched for about a minute and then it got wobbly and fell over in front of us. Easton didn’t believe me when I told him that I watched it go down. I had to send him this picture to convince him he killed it. White belly in the middle, not a great picture with the phone as it was geting dark.
Back at the house and on WiFi. Wind was wrong for that ridge this morning, didn't feel like it but a couple deer let me know I was wrong again about 10 minutes after climbing up lol So I got down, did a little scouting to find a better spot to hunt based on that wind direction, found a great one but with limited options for climbing. About that time I heard my coonhound sound off down in the valley.....my wife had taken him out this morning and he apparently found something to chase. All good now, he's back home and I'm heading into Boone to buy a new phone I guess.
Passed on 3 mature does last night (sorry Team 12), I was at the furthest stand we have up here and up here by myself and did not feel like dragging a doe that far. We can use quads to retrieve deer on state land now and my cousin forgot to leave me his quad key when he left camp. didn't sleep well last night, woke up at like 3am in my camper to dead silence and the little auxiliary light was off. Completely dead battery and it was (or should have been) fully charged when I killed the genny at like 10p. And it wasn't very cold so the furnace wasn't running much. I think I have a drain somewhere, I have always thought this camper used way more juice than my old one. I even bought a new battery this year because I thought the original battery might have been losing power. so when the alarm went off I hit *OFF* and conked out for another 3 hours. Woke up feeling much better, but a little POd I passed on the hunt because it's super foggy and I love hunting in the fog. I'll be LFTS this afternoon. GL everyone
I had some jackwagon take the card out of one of my cams last week on public land. Lost 7 days of intel. It's the same cam in the same location that was messed with last season, except they just loosened the strap, so the cam was pointing to the ground. At least they didn't take the cam. I'll relocate it later. Never understood why people can't leave other people's property alone. I hate a thief!
This make me forget the ass ache getting that doe out the other week, maybe not forget but makes me feel better about it. She looks good in the pan.
Dear heavens, son just came to drop off our trailer from mowing camp. Apparently just down hill a half mile from us(camp) was a large # of VERY LARGE buck. Then he pulled out his phone to show me the buck on his buddies lands. OK guys you've posted some beautiful buck picks on here. I've seen some GREAT buck on our place. I have never , other than deer farm freaks seen buck like the ones he showed me a bit ago. I mean crazy tine length, points , mass, widths, stickers. Our buck...disappeared once reg bow opened then the area corn got chopped.
I thought about that before he left with at least screen shot. He was talking so fast and in such a hurry I didn't approach it. He's working a night shift plus side jobs. I'll see what I can do when he slows down a little. I wish he had gotten pics of the buck he saw near camp! Hhmmm, I wrote that last sentence than realized,he may have ...but didn't want me to see them.....lol
Surprisingly I was able get my phone fixed and it didn't cost me a dime. Gonna let the mountain rest this evening and tomorrow, then back after it Wednesday morning. Good luck yall, see ya Wednesday.
I’m up for the evening, sitting south of where I was last Friday. Water hole to my north and I am stuck in between two small plots. Good luck everyone
I’m out again. Wind ripping from the north east. This doesn’t happen very often from the ENE 8-20. 62 degrees now Feels like 57 Probably won’t see anything behind me in marsh area / swamp.
I’m in and strapped! I’m not saying I won’t shoot a doe tonight if it’s before 6:30 but the odds went down after checking a camera on the way in. He needs to do the same thing but 20-25 minutes arelier would be fantastic!
