never does it fail ... sheesh ! ... the only cell cam I have and I thought I put it where no one would go .... whats up with these assholes who just have to walk on deer trails ?? .. there are 3 trails that converge here ... yea, I cant hunt now 'cause of the surgery, but once again what I thought was 'secluded' isnt ... THIS crap is why I hate state lands ...
I went out but my phone sat on the kitchen counter. No biggy absolutely NOTHING. Not even birds. I found out that heavy wool socks and insulated boots need to come out. It was dang cold 33 degrees with a brisk NE breeze. I hit the ladderstand out back managed to 8:30 then came home to do chores. Actually a tad worried the cold was stiffening up the old knees. Ladder stand, that would be interesting, as it is I wrap elbow around rungs to assure grip. Dangling from a rope isn't a goal....lol Full moon no more, but still hasn't waned enough. Good luck guys, I have an unexpected guest arriving at 5, couldn't take a loud hint..
I've been waiting to hunt this particular part of the property, guess it's time to change that. One of my old hunting buddies from MD is coming down this weekend, planning to focus on this oak flat and the draws coming off of it while he's here.
Definitely a morning spot. It's up top so the thermals should work on our favor. I try to keep to "get high in the morning, down low in the evening" problem is all of our land is technically up high compared to the farm fields in the valleys, even our valleys are 500' above the black top road. This particular ridge and connected oak flat are at about 3100'
The good news on both arrows is that I found the second one and they are both okay. I have to give the 2” Grim Reapers a little credit. The entire broadhead was buried in the tree. All three blades deployed perfectly and just the back tip of each blade was showing. I just unscrewed the arrow. The other arrow was laying right where the doe was standing. I didn’t miss her my much even after clipping a limb. I had no idea when I headed out this morning that I would be chopping wood.
Can't wait, heading out here soon. 58 degrees with temps already dropping steadily. Should make for a great evening hunt!
Funny story about hitting young oaks...we have some at my house along the yard line of our subdivions lot. Well when I switched to single bevels and heavy arrows years ago I used my 40 yard pin at 20 and shot over the target and right into the sapling oak the targets were sitting infront of. Likely a 2 inch diameter tree. That single bevel and arrow, split that tree and actually ended up with about four inches of the arrow and the broadhead making it through....it was in that moment I thought, "Yeah that'll kill..." I used tree grafting tape and wrapped the thing up and today just the faintest signs of this are visible on it. crazy.
Nope. We decided to get down about 9:30. I climbed down a little early to find my arrows. After I got them I texted Brett and said I was coming his way. His bow was already on the ground when he heard me coming. Then he heard more noise to the left. He looked and there were four does 40 yards away. Needless to say that didn’t work out well. Still, this morning I told him that the moon was still overhead enough that we should see something this morning. An early full moon is a sucky time to hunt.
