Shot a doe this evening. Hit it in the near side shoulder. About 7" of penetration, according to the blood on the shaft. Then about 2" of the shaft and the broad head broke off in the deer. Tracked for 500-600yds, blood all the way and two separate beds with blood. We backed out after the second bed. See what tomorrow brings.
You should have backed out after seeing that first bed. Especially with that kind of distance traveled. Good luck with the recovery.
Headed out at 8 to start tracking again. Will be easy to pick up her tracks again in the 6" of snow that's been on the ground here. Hopefully the trail leads to a piled up deer and not a 2 mile walk.
Was brite red blood and I know it went through the shoulder because I watched it run off on three legs. The arrow was in the shoulder blade preventing the near side front leg from moving forward. Reviewed the footage and she was broadside.
Had a nice 8 at 43 yards. Just a little too far for my liking. Going to hunt til 12 then go eat some of my deer vegetable soup I put on this morning before I left.
Well, this is a sad tale. Found 7 beds from the night before. Each with a little blood which was clearly from the right shoulder. Each closer to the last. Figured for sure I'd find her dead in a bed. But then I jumped her and off a running she went. 3 more beds with no blood in them over 3-4 miles. I'm confident that she will survive the shot and I will hope that an infection doesn't set in. I have only myself to blame! The footage shows her broadside, legs were lined up, I must have just aimed at the shoulder blade and not just to the rear of it. Operator error! Never had that happen with the crossbow.
