We don't need you guys over here, no deer here haha. Had a interesting end to my night. Was watching one doe and got past shooting light so started packing up only to turn around and see two more doe put in feild had to cross to get back. So sat and watched for while until it was bout to dark to see so lowered my bow down thinking that would run them off when threw rope down. Well no, that just made one or them come closer, then heard something coming from the other way and it ended up being a small 6 pointer. So we all had a stare down before the buck ran off and the doe stood there 15 yards from tree. Finally just decided to climb down and the 2 doe finally ran off. All together 5 doe and 2 small bucks. Overall probably best day had all year between this morning and just now as far as number of deer seen. Might end up being a good week picked to take off. Congrats Finny.
Well I'm trying not to jinx myself. but I shot a buck tonight like 130's eight. I think I nicked a limb possibly. it was the same buck I seen a few minutes earlier coming back to my snort wheeze I threw at him. it was the last minutes of light left in our season when I made the shot. I have to go back in the morning to try a recovery mission. when I shot him he ran about 10 yds then just started walking. after walking a couple of yards he started limping real bad. I thought uh oh my arrow deflected and hit him in the leg. but he walked about 30yds and bedded down immediately. I waited til dark to sneak out of there so I didn't jump him. I physically seen him bed so I now have mixed feelings on the shot.he was ever so slightly quartering to so maybe it hit the shoulder and then through the liver? not really sure. I couldn't recover the arrow because he was bedded so close. one good thing is that there is still snow there. see now I jinxed myself. I'm a little nervous having to recover seeing that our season ended today. don't matter I'm going in after him anyways.
forgot to mention this buck was full lock down with a doe just feeding about 40yds behind her. he was just keeping her within sight.
I picked up a gun permit! First time in years and years... now do I sling lead with the 44 mag or the 12 ga?
Good job Finny. Tc....best of luck on the recovery. Sounds like a liver hit. He is dead if he bedded that quick.....
when he bedded it wasn't like a death fall. he laid down as if bedding. you know what I'm trying to say? I am trying to explain it correctly. acted like liver shot how they scurry out of sight before bedding. he was in a clearcut so he probably felt safe. these deer most likely have never seen people so he probably thought "what the heck just happened".
I think if it was a shoulder or a leg wound he wouldn't have bedded like that. who knows I guess we will know in the morning.
Give him as long as possible, bedding quick is a good thing but depending on where he was shot could be a long wait. Maybe see about a dog if possible, the wait for one to arrive may be a beneficial plus as well. Without the arrow or sign at the place of the shot you don't know if there is blood or not. Bedding down that soon will allow him to possibly clot up relatively close to the shot location. Short blood trail. A plus is that your season did end, not much worry about messing up.future hunts. Good luck in the recovery/search, and get a dog if possible.
It really does make it easier to carry it than drag it on grass like you see there...snow would be a drag...
I'd go with the 12 gauge. Even though we can use rifles here (I shoot a single shot .270), I've always wanted to get a single shot, rifled barreled 12 gauge to hunt deer. Something about it just seems really appealing
