Uggh. Parents just called. They were watching a monster 12 point not far below my doe bedding stand. I told them to get a picture at least. They called back. Memory card was full and they don't know how to delete photos. Smh...now he's gone. There were rumors of this deer circulating the area all fall.
Dude, what's up with the dogs? Is he hunting there or do they just run wild? Can you talk to him about it? Or does he really dislike you?
Hit a rib bone on center going in and made a 2" hole on the other side going out towards the bottom of the deer. I was higher in the tree (30') than the deer was away. I bowhunted all of October and never had any chances except for a fawn, which I won't shoot because it's a fawn and because I only get a tag for one deer in my area. I enjoy being out in my treestand with a bow because October is a great month to watch all the leaves change. I worry a lot about making a bad shot on a deer with an arrow because bad shots seem a lot easier with a bow than a gun. I always wait for the perfect broadside shot with a gun and make the shot count. 80 yards is the furthest you can see from any of my treestands. Just because I'm shooting something with a gun doesn't give me the right to take a more questionable shot than I would with a bow. It's not fair or respectful to the animal and I'm not a fan of chasing any wounded animal through the woods.
The advantage to a gun is not havin to draw it like a bow.. being able to hit a deer on the run and them just out of bow range deer. The big buck I had at 60 this year would have been in major trouble if I had my 12ga.. My farthest deer kill with a gun was around 115 yrds. I dont gun hunt anymore but this year I have thought about it... probably not a shotgun but maybe a handgun. I will be taking my wife out and helping her get her first deer kill next weekend. I hope she gets a crack at one of the big bucks I have been seeing.
Good luck everyone. Wind is picking up again. I'm headed to the house. Going to be 66 degrees today. Too warm.
we just have some annoying gun hunters in my area. i know a guy who drags his 50cal out to his treehouse and says he only takes head shots no less than 400yds. other guys brag how they have to shoot them in the eye just things like that annoy me. i know not all gun hunters are that way. but the few spoil it for all. pa we can use anything during gun season. first day there are over a million in the orange army hitting the woods all at once. talk about a slaughter.
He has them kenneled, but 2 of them are constantly escaping. He left for missouri rifle hunting yesterday, so not sure when or how they got out. I think these two run free more than not and when put in the pen dig under or however else they escape. It isn't his fault and can't really ble the dogs either. Just is what it is I guess, deal with it or hunt elsewhere. Didn't really think of it the first time they chased rabbits around, the other time they scent trailed me to the tree but other than running around didn't do much. Now I'm realizing they are probably all over on the days I am not there as well, so makes perfect sense why the lack of movement and things seemed a little off.
You know how hard it is to play the wind at 1500 yards! That is why I keep it with in 1000 yards. Just have to use better scent control. lol
I'm getting reports from a lot of people in the woods today that they are seeing a lot of good bucks.
Not a good day in NW PA. Had another hunter walk in (I hunt private land) about 40 yards away and turn back around. When we got down we looked in the binoculars but couldn't see him. He came in on a 4 wheeler. Moved to another stand and had a 4 pt fly past about 100mph. Only action all morning. Will try this afternoon. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
home now for lunch and a few errands hoping this afternoon is as exciting as the morning but I doubt that itll keep up when i get back
I need the clouds to return. And has anyone had success with calling a buck into shooting range? I'm 0 for 4 this year.
