Wife looked at a place she loves today and called me to come look. I went and looked and saw a decent house that will take a lot of work to convert it over to what the wife tastes. It has a six car garage, but the garage needs a new roof and the shed (24x24) needs work on the roof too. I had a contractor friend come over and look at it with me and took notes on what he said. Needs new A/C, Furnace is 30 years old, and hot water heater. I told the wife we could put in an offer, but the changes she wants will have to taken on a little at a time. Without batting an eye she looked at me and said ok. The offer is in and we'll know by Friday if they accepted.
If the offer is accepted, three stalls in the garage will be the woodworking shop and the other 3 will be for the cars and tractor. The wife asked where her "stuff" was going and I replied in your 2000 sq ft house. Indoors is hers and outdoors is MINE!
I learned that unless im willing to shell out money, dont buy a fixer upper. We had so many fights trying to paint our house, that combined with my laziness didn't work out too well. I still one day want to be the handyman and fix everything.
I bought a fixer upper in 2005. 8 years later, its still a work in progress. Even if you enjoy stuff like that, it can still be a PITA. Good luck to ya.
It's not a fixer upper per say, it's just alterations my wife wants. The carpet is newer and not gaudy looking but she prefers hardwood floors and wants me to take up the carpet which could also result in having to refinish the floors. She wants a privacy fence around the side yard and then a play set for our granddaughter built there. She wants the interior of the garage changed so she can have an area to start plants early. She wants lattice put up around the formal garden. She wants.... I could buy her a brand new house with everything on her list and still she would want changes. Part of being married I guess.
awesome congrats! its a great feeling! when we bought our dream house last year, we went back and forth a bit, but then we realized....who cares about 5 grand over 30 years? LOL!!! I'm sure you know, but don't hesitate to check out the VA loan if you haven't done so already! Worked out great for us. Good luck!!
Bought my fixer upper last year. It's a great feeling seeing your work get done with your own hands, but damn does it take up a lot of free time.
