I was at the Local Wally world last night to pick up some dead downwind body wash & shampoo. After thinking to myself $10 for a freaking shampoo? I went to the health and beauty department determined to find a similar product for half the price. Well I arrive at the shampoo and body wash section and immediately discovered some odor shield products from Old Spice and Gillette for $4 each. My question to you is has anyone used these products? Do they still have scent? They say Fresh or sport on the bottle. (I haven’t been able to smell since Fathers day, 2000). Note to self; Don’t ride on the tail gate done the highway. BAD very BAD! These products claim to eliminate body odor up to 16 hours. However, I don’t know if it has any perfumes or scent to it? Needless to say, I ended up buying the dead downwind body wash, but I’m curious about this other stuff. Does anyone else know of a cheaper solution other then taken a 30 minute marinade in Baking soda prior to departing to the woods?
Here is the way I approach things, IF you keep the wind right it doesn't matter. When stand hunting one can use carbon suits and various body washes, and likely get by with having the wind wrong some of the time. but our clothing picks up scent anywhere we go, so if you want to be completely scent neutral as possible they would need to be in a container, and put on at the site.
I wish I had a good answer for you on this one ! I have been pursuing the more inexpensive scent free shampoo solution all year and so far havnt come up with any Great Solutions. When looking at a hair care product read the ingredients and they will have listed any added fragrence. I have not yet found a single scent free shampoo, condioner or body soap on the shelves in a local stores I have searched here... pretty fustrating, I even scoured the baby item isles. There is an assortment of Fragrence free shampoos on line just google fragrence free shampoo = for example ( http://www.drugstore.com/free-and-c...-skin/qxp233252?catid=183500&fromsrch=shampoo ) that sell for a lower sticker price than the brands out there being marketed specifically to the Hunters out there. I even looked a making my own fragrence free shampoo but found the ingredients( selling at retail not wholesale ) to not be so cost effective to produce it. I have been since last year making my own scent elliminating spray and I am just spraying my hair with it after shampooing , ( yes it is drying to the hair and skin ) but it is very inexpensive to make, works very well and seemed the lessor of two evils. I also just last night watched a show on PBS on Skunks and they said the best way to treat your pet after being sprayed by a skunk was to use the same scent eliminating recipe that I have been using, ( the H Peroxide, Baking Soda, Distiller Water and tablespoon fragrence free detergent). I hope you find one that you are happy with .. but I am still searching.
Dove makes an unscented bar soap. With that being said i am trying the dead down wind bar soap. If you lather it up in your hands it actually works as a shampoo. The Old spice fresh and sport are both scented, My fiance prefers the sport, so i have both body wash and deodorant. The claim to eliminate body odor seems to be a stretch of just cover it up.
The problem with this is that I am hunting on the only ridge (about 2 acres of old acorn trees) on my 60 acres (at the Far East line). 10 feet north of me is the beginning of a 5 acre very thick bedding area (2", 3" trees), and to the east of me is where a corn field meets mostly open pasture (not for cows), and 100 yards NE of my stand sits a small pond that was the only water source during the drought this summer. HEHEHEHE! west & south of me are the thick bottoms/wetlands. So I have deer hitting this hill top from every direction and now that the acorns are falling this place becomes circus of deer at all times of the day. I am set up right in the middle of the hill, at the edge of the corn, bedding and all you can eat acorns. I will only hunt this stand with northern winds. Nevertheless, I am so close to everything I can't afford to have BO of any kind. Needless to say, I’ve now washed all of my cloth twice with 2 cups of Baking soda and over kill on the scent free detergent, also used the autumn scented dryer sheets and then placed them in the oversized zip lock bags and removed all the air. I will add baking soda to those bags tonight.
If you're committed to a scent regimen, make sure you don't use the expensive soaps and then get out and dry off with a towel that has been washed with Gain and dried with Snuggle. Kinda makes the whole thing useless... I say shower with some unscented (or hypo allergenic) soap, dry off with a towel that has been washed in the same stuff as your camo, and use caution on the way to your stand so as to not pick up extra scents. i.e. don't stop and get gas and breakfast... Most of all, play the wind and have fun. Many thousands of deer have died from guys with gas on their boots, bacon grease on their pants, and skoal on their breath. I guarantee you most of those men had the wind in their face.
Scent Free Laundry Detergent , like All Free and Clear , and Arm and Hammer and Arrid XX deoderant are the only off the shelf in stores i found that dont have an odor of perfume , Just buy a 32oz bottle of Scent A-Way hair and body soap for $10.00 and be done with it , one last me a long time
