If its anything like IL, you get good pay and benefits to babysit our former governors.:D

Many of my friends are corrections officers and hate their jobs. But, they have nice homes, cars and lots of toys, too. It's a trade off they chose to make. Good luck Tony.

    Thanks, Brutha :)

It seems no matter what I do, I am dealing with people ... I'm gonna go for it ... if The Lord closes doors, no harm done ... if I get it, I am trusting it to be His will :)

I'll never work in any form of corrections again. I did it for a year and a half at a juvenile facility (16-21yrs old) until i could transfer to another agency. Thats the nice part about working for the state (not sure if NY is the same as PA). you can transfer agency to agency and not lose any of your leave, benefits, retirement time, etc. Good luck with whatever you use.

I have worked in a correctional facility (juveniles up to 18) for the past five years. Follow your heart, but I would say NO, especially if it is in the adult system. You will not only be dealing with criminals, but will be dealing with absolute morons as your co-workers. I am not kidding. I have a guy that works for me now that worked at a max prison in Minnesota for three years and said it was absolute hell.

PT, the reason why many people dislike the job is because logic does not prevail. People in administrative and leadership positions in those institutions consistently make illogical, dumb, decisions that negatively effect the morale and safety of the employees.

If you get the job and don't like it you can always resign. The key is getting the job first. It is not an opportunity unless you take advantage of it. To dismiss an "unknown" opportunity without pursuing it does not seem wise to me. It is good fortune to even get the opportunity in these economic times, it only makes sense to pursue it. Best of luck to you, Tony.

State correctional institutes are unionized. That means the guys the union wants to promote, they promote ahead of more deserving employees. Guys that get promoted almost become untouchable and just slack off at work, thereby creating an even more dangerous environment for the staff. I have talked with many guys that worked in the state correctional systems and almost all of them, regardless of age/race say it is a jungle of horrors.

Unlimited opportunities to share the truth would be a serious benefit to a man like you as well. Best of luck in this T.

You live in NY??? God, how did we let that happen? LOL I never realized that. Although, Buffalo is not what I call NY. LOL The benifits are unequaled. In the right position you work about 3 days a week... at least that's what a couple people I've met in the system do. Hell, they have full time jobs away from their full time job.

Best of luck to you bro in whatever you decide to do. Personally, wouldn't be my kind of thing. I know a lot of guards and most of them hate life. Others think that little badge thing of theirs actually means something lol. Just not my type of lifestyle, but I suppose they make ok money and hardly have to work for it with us paying them (another subject .. sorry). Just ask yourself if that's where you want to head to work every morning.

Good luck, Preach. I've got a cousin who's been in the system (on the good side of the bars) for 20+yrs. I NEVER would have figured him for that job. But, he's got more accreditations than I care to even guess at. Obviously, it's a great career path (he does REALLY well).

Good luck! I personally think that job would suck. But if you have the right personality for it, it could work.

PT, if it is right for you, it will happen. If not, other doors will open.
