LINK This map is truly amazing. I've been studying it for hours. It just shows that even though we like to believe we live in this desegregated world, that we as humans, instinctively segregate ourselves. Here are my stats: Parish (County): White: 49% Black: 46% Hispanics: 2% Asians: 1% Other: 1% My block: White: 96% Black: 0% Hispanics: 1% Asians: 2% Other: 2% As you can see, I love diversity ETA: The NY Times sucks as math, neither of my stats add up to 100%...
I watched a cool show on genetics last night on the Nat Geo channel that mapped hundreds of New Yorkers out to see where their ancestors came from tens of thousands of year ago. Some blacks were a lot more "white" than thought, some South Americans were a lot more "Asian" than they originally believed, and some Whites were more "Middle Eastern". It was a wild show where devout Muslims had Jewish roots and vice versa. Groups of humans clumped together in only a few major areas prior to dispersing throughout the globe, so the majority of us are linked at the hip genetically at about a 99.9% rate. But like you said above, humans love to categorize and segragate based on perceived physical and cultural differences. Here is my county: 400,000 people 68.93% White, 18.76% Black or African American 0.39% Native American 3.81% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander 4.35% from other races 3.62% from two or more races. 9.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. My "block" might be 30 houses. 29 houses of which are "white" and 1 house with "hispanics". Or something like this: White=96% Hispanic=4%
My county- 23,195 people White: 95% Black: 0% Hispanics: 3% Asians: 1% Other: 1% My area- White: 96% Black: 0% Hispanics: 2% Asians: 1% Other: 2%
Man, go to the Washington DC map and look at that divide amongst blacks and whites. This map should be required reading in the public schools, showing students a tangible map and then asking them to look introspectively as to why this phenomenon may be occurring.
The large cities, such as NYC, Philly, LA, Baltimore, Houston, etc are amazing to look at zoomed out.
Baldwin(County): White: 85% Black:10% Hispanics: 3% Asians: 1% Other: 2% My block: White: 96% Black: 2% Hispanics: 1% Asians: 0% Other: 1%
My county- Population: 601,813 White: 78% Black: 9% Hispanics: 9% Asians: 2% Other: 2% My city- White: 51% Black: 26% Hispanics: 19% Asians: 1% Other: 3% My area- Population: 3,951 White: 91% Black: 3% Hispanics: 3% Asians: 0% Other: 2% Grand Rapids is considered one of the most diverse cities in Michigan. Its one of the main reasons we live there. Having biracial kids, my wife and I knew we had to live some place where that is "accepted". There are a lot of places in Michigan where it is not.
My area: Pop: 7881 White: 73% Black: 13% Hispanic: 8% Asian: 3% Other: 3% My County Pop: 566,657 White: 68% Black: 13% Hispanic: 15% Asian: 1% Other: 2% And looking at Miami further proves that it's not really part of america! Miami Dade County Pop: 2,457,044 White: 18% Black: 18% Hispanic: 61% Asian: 1% Other: 1%
It appears that there is a group of 25 Asians living in a bottom ground/ag area down the street from my parents.:D
I find it mildly amusing that they label native americans as "other" We have 10% "other" in my county.
Very interesting link My County: Pop: 62,075 White: 93% Black: 2% Hispanic: 2% Asian: 1% Other: 2% My Area: Pop: 10,098 White: 94% Black: 2% Hispanic: 1% Asian: 1% Other: 2%
This map is just tax-dollar wasting guessing. It shows my mom's street as being 75% hispanic and 25% white. She's Japanese. Her neighbors are not 75% hispanic. It doesn't show any asians in here immediate area. Where I live now, the map doesn't show any dots in town at all. I think there are about four green dots within a mile of town. So, according to this map...town has been abandoned and only 100 people (all white folks) live anywhere close. ?? I didn't fill out that stupid American Community Survey when it came in the mail here last time. Have you seen it?... it's ridiculous. So, I guess only the white people around here filled it out. Us non-whites must all be civil disobedients and excericising our constituional right to refuse to answer the ACS. ...because I know I'm not the only non-white around here. (and while it's a dinky town.. people really do live here) I did fill out the ACS back when I lived up in C'ville. It shows 26% white, 18% black, 55% hispanic, 0% asians, 2% others for my area. That seems pretty low on the hispanics, and WTF... No asians again?? I'm pretty sure I didn't list myself as an 'other'. In my algebra class this semster we did sort of self-segregate. It was kind of amusing. We work in groups and as we filtered in and filled the tables, ours was the 'non-white' group. There was another asian kid in my group. We both suck at math... we're such a disgrace to the asian race.
