I'm eastern NY and its night and day to western New York. Problem with NY is its so vast across the state that it's hard to get everyone on the same page. But eastern NY is some of the best turkey hunting you will ever find! Also some really good fishing. Can't beat the southern Adirondack Park for outdoor activities.
I lived in the Hudson Valley for about 10 years. Their is some great hunting to be had. With all the McMansions going up it made for some great funnels around the farm. They put up the antler restriction at that time which helped tremendously. But I agree with Sota 2 Buck tags worked in the opposite direction of management. Their is a high density of deer in some areas. I've counted over 50 deer at times in the alfalfa in late summer. They need better Regulations, Smaller Zones, Higher Doe Harvest, and 1 Buck Tag to use through out the season. That also needs to be regulated different for each Zone. I have friends in Fulton, near Oswego. They have great black soil just prime for big antlers but they get lots of lake Effect snow which makes for harsh winters. NY is very diverse, but so are a lot of other states. F&G just needs to get their game together and quit appeasing so many tree huggers. It's heading the way of Cali.
I hunt primarily in Eastern NY along the MA line. I live about 15 min from the NY line here in MA. I generally am a meat hunter locally. I do go out to the finger lakes area and hunt a place that is managed very intensely. I see tons of deer there and plenty of bucks I would shoot back home. I have been successful out there over the years as well taking several nice bucks and missing several as well.
We had great weather up until about a week and half ago. Now it's highs in the 60's ....can't complain though. It should warm up some by then ...where are you staying?
Nice place, stayed there for a friends wedding. Hopefully you have nice weather, it's Beautiful on the lake.
It is a nice place, beautiful area but as I drive from the lake into Glenns Falls I get visions of how full it must be of a-holes from the city come tourist season.
I live about 45 min dead east of Albany. Grab dinner as Lombardo's if you want some great Italian Food.
These are all NY Deer. Shot in Cayuga County. The ones I shoot close to home in Columbia County are generally small.
Welcome fellow NYer!! I`m on Long Island, a million miles away from you!! I do hunt up in Delaware county as well. Any questions, fire away!!
I recommend a short drive up toward Northwest bay if you like yellow perch and bass fishing. Another nice detour is down 9N through Lake Luzerne/Corinth and the surrounding back roads...just for the scenery, especially in Autumn.
Well NY of going to be even better in around 37 hours. Turkey season is finally here. My Heli is all dialed in and spirits are high.
Corinth is my hometown. Nice little area. Just far enough away from everything but close enough you aren't disconnected.
