I bought my first bow today. A 2007 Bowtech tomcat. I took it to the local shop and had them adjust the DL, reduce the pull from 70 to 60, added a peep sight and a loop release rope. I shot it several times and was amazed how smooth, effortless and accurate it is. I think that I am really going to enjoy shooting this. Now I have a few questions: 1. I have a lighted True Glo sight(5 pin). What is the best way to go about sighting it in and at what distances? 2. Any recommendation for a practice routine? 3. At what point do you know that you are shooting well enough to actually go hunting? 4. Any other input or advice? Thanks in advance! Mike
***Sighting in and setting up a bow is always easier if you can get hands on help from a knowledgeable person in your area. 1. Many people do it many different ways. First, start off very close (10 feet) and use the top pin to make sure you are even in the ballpark. If you are just a bit high, move back (10 yards). If not, you will need to adjust the sight. Rule of thumb is follow the arrow. If you are shooting too high, then you need to move the pin up. Shooting too low, then move the pin down. Same with right and left. Destances, are even more personal. Starting out you may want to have a 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 yard pins with your 5 pin setup. My top pin is 20 and if I were you I would drop the bottom two or three pins out and concentrate on 20 and 30 if that is your top two pins. 2. As for a practice routine, shoot as much as you are comfortable, you will know when you are too tired. Don't go hog wild and shoot hundreds of arrows the first time out because you couldn't get it quite sighted in. Try and work your way back to 20 yards using the above method. If it's 40 arrows and your arm is spent, take a break for a few hours or till the next day, no use shooting while your arm is rubber, it's not gonna help you. 3. It's really a confidence thing. When you feel you can consistantly put that arrow in a deer's vitals, then you are ready. That's might only be at 20 yards, you just have hold yourself to your own personal effective distance. 4. I have more, but I am leaving for church. Feel free to pm. Good luck. You have chosen a great sport and got a great bow. Above all, have fun.
i have 5 pins for my sight also, i have mine set at 10,20,30,40,50 i like to practice fairly often, but during the off season jan. to july or so i don't honestly shoot as often, but it depends on the year. you may want to join a league or go on shoots to keep up your shooting. as stated above start close and work you way back. most people use their top sight at 20 yards, but i have a 10 yard pin, had to bend it a little to get it close enough to work though. i wanted a 10 yard pin because i have had alot of deer that close. it isn't necessary, but i like it. i think you'll know when your ready to hunt. it's a confidence thing. i know that i can hit a soda can top out to 50 yards, not that i shoot at soda cans . but i haven't ever had to think about shooting a deer that far, i try to get them closer, as does everyone only other advice is take care of your bow, wax your string often, don leave water or snow sit on it, all stuff i'm sure you know. good luck
