That knife is amazing! The kind that actually means something when you pass it on to your kids (or anybody for that matter).
You know I was looking at my boy last night thinking about that. I have a 1920's fixed blade stag handle. Have no idea who made it. I use it quite a bit. It was my grandfathers. And I love this knife. Only thing that was ever given to me from a grandfather or father. And hopefully I will have a grandchild one day skinning a deer with this knife thinking, my great, great grandfather skinned deer with this knife.
Ouch.... simmer down big fella. I thought the thread was about knives. You told about your's... I told about mine. Hawks???? I love every picture Chenango Dave post and I think if you go back you'll find I said that in every thread. THis thread is not about me or you.... it's about a knife. Sorry if you think I was attacking you. Far from it.
Kinda sensitive about it is all. I generally do not spend money on pretty doo dads. And this was my first in a long time. Generally I stick with flat black, matte, get the job done deals. Got the wife looking at me when I got it, saying, "ok, if thats what you want, but you need some clothes, but buy your pretty toy".
Not trying to make this about me.... but I did the same thing when I bought my "big name binos". LOL My wife never knew what I paid for them...... but dang, I had to have them. Been there done that. LOL
I make turkey calls, they are pretty nice looking (I think) Spoke to a guy today who said he owns a call that he won't take in the woods with him. So why own it? Its a freaking turkey call. I made the call with the Camo/Eagle Globe and Anchor for a elected official here in VA that assists our Wounded Warrior hunts - I expect him to USE it, not just display it. Beautiful knife! Hope you get to use the heck out of it! Thanks for sharing.
Thats called damascus. Its a welding process where they take two or maybe three metals and heat and hammer and fold over even times to get a look or desired layers. I picked 1095 metal and 15N20. So you have the hardness of the 15N20 but the softness of 1095. And it should hold an edge better than 440C but not be as brittle. And it also acts like a steakknife with the different metals at a microscopic level.
Big- that is really a beautiful knife. I have never put much thought into getting a custom knife, but I think I might have to start looking around. I really like the thought of someday passing something like this down to my son.
Great looking knife and you definitely got a great deal on it. Unfortunately, I'm one of those that would put it into a case and hold onto it without using it for fear of damage or getting lost if I could muster myself up to buy one. Values of blades is something that each person decides. BTW, those are some great looking turkey calls as well!
BC... I'm really not up to date on all this stuff. That handle is a killer to look at. When I hear Mammoth I have visions of beast from the ice age. LOL What exactly is this stuff. Definitely beautiful to look at.
Yea, you can still get the stuff believe it or not. Think most of it comes from the black market in siberia. Not cheap at 120-500 dollars a small chunk. I am trying to start make pre-1972 (legal) ivory gun handles. http://www.boonetrading.com/MammothIvory.html When they say "stabilized", what knife makers mean (and gun handles) is they put these ***ile slivers in a jar with epoxy and put them under a vacuum for a few weeks. Bascially any void gets filled with epoxy. Thats the reason they can make tough handles out of rotten spalted maple (believe it or not, it looks cool).
Thanks, not yet... I am going to try my hand at either scratch boxes or box calls next. I have been trying to get a video by a gent named Neil Cost for about two months now, he is supposed to be the gran daddy of the box call so I want to start out smartly. Sean
Now that makes it a very cool knife to own........ Hairy mammoth bones from long ago. Sweet stuff right there.
That is one awesome knife and I'm with you, it would make every trip afield with me. My step dad has made all the grand kids a knife to this point and my daughter refuses to take hers to the field. My son will gets his this christmas as is the tradition, first christmas after turning 12. Here is my daughters, that has never been used.
Mark....like I said before, thats a beauty and worth every penny and then some!!!!!! Here is my neck knife Clarence made for me....
