Oh man that sucks!! Sorry I'm not to knowledgeable about the costs of rebuilding a trans but I would think that you're guesstimation isn't to far off.

Damn seems that stuff always happens when you can't afford it and least expect it. Have no idea on cost but I'm sure more than a grand.

Trans rebuild for my truck is about $2,500.00

You can rebuild a NP435 for less than $500

It is all going to depend. If you just throw a servo or clutch pack in there versus a complete teardown and rebuild. Add extra if the torque converter needs some work.

How good is your luck, and how cheap are you willing to go? I always recommend a complete rebuild if it is gonna be out of the truck and on the bench anyway.

I'm not a transmission guy, just a hot rod enthusiast.

Is it an automatic or a 4-5-6 speed manual?

I blew the trans in my truck about 2yrs ago. Cost me around 1800 for a complete rebuild with a new torque converter.

I had a transmission rebuilt on a 88 Chevy 1500 van and I always said if it happened agai I would just opt for a brand new transmission. It's was the same cost but the guys sold me on his rebuilt being better than a new one:-/. It never ran the same:(

    I'd go new.

And take heart, repairs are a lot less than monthy payments. Drive her into the ground. Saw a lot of old truck in Cali being refurbished and driven around as classics.

I feel your pain, this diesel likes to eat up money for maintenance. On top of that, just had to drop $680 on the motorcycle to get it fixed and another $560 on vet bills! Most important was the dog, I can always walk to work if need be lol
