Looking for any help in finding a place to bow hunt in or around louden county va Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hey man, I recently moved to the Tidewater area and last year was a rough go of it when it comes to bow hunting. Coming from Iowa, VA is a hunters culture shock to say the least. If an area is not tied up by dog running hunting clubs, it seems that you have to know someone who knows someone or the doors are as good as shut. I am not saying that the opportunities are not there, I think I just happen to be trying to hunt in one of the most populated areas of the Eastern shore. My advice to you would be to get out there and try to meet as many hunters as you can by going to local hunting shops, archery club meetings/shoots, or any other place that allows for sportsmen to gather where you can meet and network. Another good option is the military installations if you have the ability to get on them. They offer good opportunities under much more controlled public conditions than this states public lands. I also had some fun punching my way through some public places as well. As hard as they get hit, the old rule stands true: most hunters do not go very far into the woods. I finally found my honey hole on the last day of gun season last year after several hunts of learning the area and scouting deeper each time I went out. I will say that my favorite hunt of the year was a turkey hunt in the blue ridge mountains. Turkeys everywhere, black bear, and some bigger size whitetails are all hopeful up there and I had all three within forty yards in one morning. I consider myself fortunate for that and quite lucky, but the opportunity is there.
Outdoor Aron has great advice I hunted the military base the first two years look on the va fish and game for the closest public ground. You should have some farms over your way. I am going over to the Gorge Washington national forest this year for archery bear. GWNF is large and full of game. Don't forget to stay urine free
Thanks for the suggestions. I have been looking hard in Loundoun county and it is very difficult to find hunters or people to even talk to... Any other help would be greatly appreciated thanks
I'd give Quantico a shot, a lot of room and quite a bit of bow hunting only areas. I have heard that Ft. Belvoir is good as well but I can't confirm. A third choice that is further away but huge amount of land is Ft. A.P. Hill.
