I live in the northeast and want to put in a couple of remote food plots. I have a tractor but don't have a harrow or anything for it. So basically I'm looking for suggestions on seed to plant that will do well where the ground has been minimally treated and probably should be fairly shade tolerant. Any thoughts?
Oats will practically grow on cement......buckwheat is easy and deer love it. Chicory and clover is nice but I'm not fond of clover for a kill plot in the northeast. Triticale (sp?) and sainfoin (sp?) are ok as well but don't make deer come looking for it in my experience but they will eat it if it's in front of them. I am going to plant chicory, oats, buckwheat and maybe some clover as soon as weather allows......then till it all under in July and switch to our brassica mix.
Clover gets to be expensive though if you want a good stand for a few years. Oats is what I would say.
Yes, it is worth it....otherwise you will blame the seed, or nature, or rain or drought or well you get the point.
