ND is one of the better states in the country for big whitetail hunting. I don't know the Minot area well at all but a friend of mine has killed 3 bucks 146"-172" over the past 6 years hunting private land 20 miles south of there.

The bow season opens last week of Aug or first week of Sept. The high temps could be in the 90's at this time (I can remember it hitting 100 one year). It normally does not start getting significantly cold until some point mid-late October.

I recently read an article that said ND was the place you are least likely to see a fellow bow hunter. Next fall ND is in my top three states to hunt.

Has anyone taken advantage of the early opener to chase velvet bucks? That is high on my bucket list and ND seems like a good option.

I tried once. Got a couple buddies that go every year. Would be more fun if the specific area we went was more predictable

Looks like 2017 & 2018 should have openers around the 27-28th of Aug. Beginning to do my homework now to be ready for a couple of tries then.

This is straight from ND Game and Fish regulations:

    Hunting Big Game Over Bait
It is unlawful for an individual to hunt big game over bait in deer hunting units 3C west of the Missouri River, 3E1, 3E2, 3F1 and 3F2. Hunting big game over bait on all Department wildlife management areas is prohibited. Hunting over bait is defined as the placement and/or use of bait(s) for attracting big game and other wildlife to a specific location for the purpose of hunting. Baits include but are not limited to grains, minerals, salts, fruits, vegetables, hay or any other natural or manufactured foods. The designation does not apply to the use of scents and lures, water, food plots, standing crops or livestock feeds used in standard practices.

Hunting over bait is also not allowed on all U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service national wildlife refuges and waterfowl production areas; U.S. Forest Service national grasslands; and all North Dakota state school, state park and state forest service lands.
