I will be moving to Minot ND in a few weeks (Military Orders)...anyways I am wondering about the hunting.

Anything I should know before hand? I have never hunted public ground before so this is new to me. Does ND hold any bruisers and how far am I looking to travel for a chance at a decent buck?

Also I have never hunted Muley's/Antelope so if anyone has a good public location for me to go it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Shot this guy this year 30 miles from Minot and there is a refuge 15 minutes from minot open to bow hunters. And it holds big deer

For muleys your looking at about a 3 hour drive to the badlands with 1000's of acres of public land and big muleys

Not to mention that if it isn't posted, it's fair game.

Yeah this kind of blows my mind. Hunting in Missouri the rules are a little different.

With this refuge being so close to the base and the town. What are the chances I run into another hunter out there?

Idk what the odds would be. I have never bow hunted it just have seen vehicles parked when scouting waterfowl but outside of gun season you probably shouldn't have trouble. There's alotta ground for the people and it holds its share of booners

My brother has been bow hunting North Dakota for a several years now. He goes with a small group. They are all pretty successful there and they bring home some nice bucks! He says even if you don't fill a tag it's always quite the experience compared to hunting here in MN.

Sorry that I don't know where they go but we were invited to go this year. Soon enough we will be getting details panned out.

Go to the website and find the maps for the PLOTS land (Private Land Open to Sportsmen) and look it over. Also, there is a ton of public ground surrounding the reservoirs both north and south of Minot. Most of it is good deer hunting, although the numbers are down. I have seen herds of antelope while deer hunting in central North Dakota, but the best antelope is farther west. West of Minot is all oil country and the pressure has ramped up because of the Bakken oil boom that has really tapered off in the last year.

I sat kearn once with a buddy and saw NOTHING. I was fortunate enough that my Wife's parents live here so I have been hunting private ground for the last few years.

Ready for Minot though....maybe not the cold but the hunting for sure!

I saw a big one at kearn, but had a lot of activity. You really have to hike in there to get to where the deer are. Saw some giants at Perry. It will be better next year since no rifle is allowed there.
