I am new to whitetail hunting and have never put out a trail cam and am hoping to do so this coming weekend and I was wondering what makes a spot good to put a cam up?
Ya near water was what I was thinking, just wasn't sure. Either that or I was going to find some crops to put it near but I think water is where it'll be going.
I like putting cameras near a licking branch where bucks make scrapes every year. They use them year round.
It depends on what you are using the pictures for. If you are trying to pattern deer for the season then major trails and natural food is where to start. If you are wanting to see what deer are in the area try using a mineral site or bait pile early, but i wouldn't keep baiting close to season, cause the deer are going to move out when the food is gone.
There are alot of good answers already. Not to overwhelm you but like gilligw has said it depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your trail camera. Here are some places I would use it. Spring to early Summer- Mineral sites, water, major trail crossings for inventory purposes Late Summer- Soybean fields again for inventory Early Fall- Water, Funnels, major trail crossings, food plots for stand placement ideas Late Fall- When the rut is about to kick in I move almost all of my cameras to scrapes. You will get an idea of when the bucks start cruising more during daylight to help decide when you should move in and try and kill a buck. Late Season- Food, Major trail crossings to find out what deer made it through the season Good luck, looking forward to your pics. Becareful they can become addicting
