I'm looking for my first modern compound bow - something high end. I recently bought an old school Oneida to get some practice and decide if this is something I wanted to get into. I tried a high end crossbow first and couldn't stand it but I love shooting a compound. I have a shoulder injury - the crossbow was far worse on my shoulder than the compound and no where near as fun. The issue here is that right now I am at about a 50# draw. So when looking to purchase a bow, it turns out most of the used ones are 60-70#. I had a guy tell me that his 60-75# bow would be closer to 50# when I adjusted the draw length down to my 28" length. I am pretty sure this is total BS and that there is no correlation between length and weight. I am relatively sure he was just saying it to try and sell his bow. I would eventually like to work up to a 60# or above weight but I do not want to buy something that is too hard to draw and then not be able to practice as much or enjoy it, or further exacerbate my shoulder injury. Is there any truth to what he was saying? Also I was looking really hard at the Diamond Infinite Edge which is supposedly adjustable from 15lbs all the way up to 70lbs and can be bought as a package already tuned to your specs. Does anyone have an opinion on that Bow? Is it just gimmicky or is it a good option for someone new to bowhunting? Thanks in advance for the help!

I have seen it stated somewhere by an old hand that every inch of draw length above 28 increases the draw weight by 3, but that could just be for Recurve's.

You would be able to go to a pro shop and ask if they can get a bow in stock with 50-60 pound limbs. Some 60-70 will adjust lower than what they say and hit around 55 or so if you can draw that back.

Some of the new highly adjustable bows are pretty nice and shoot well. My Dad is 72 years old, recovering from a long-time shoulder injury, and he draws 50# at 29". He bought the Mission Riot about this time last year and loves it. It is not a "gimmicky" bow. The Craze is another bow by Mission that is very adjustable and gets good reviews.

I have a Mathews Monster 6. It's a 70# bow and I just dropped the weight down to about 52#. I haven't had it properly weighed yet I'm just estimating.
I've had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders. That's why I dropped the weight to a comfortable weight.
