So ppl tell me that most guys don't walk in very far, I was just gonna hike in like an hour or two before setting up someplace. Would you think that's a good plan or what?

Dude get yourself a climber, or hang on. I wouldnt walk too far, but hey it all depends on where you'll be hunting. I've shot deer 100 yards off the road in public land.....

Good deal brother, I'm over the Middle east, I know your pain, I get home i about a week and a half though, so I get a few days before season opens. But I hunt the same places, and on public land every now and then. If your doing the public land, I would go maybe 2 hours before sunrise, use google earth before hand and just find a spot that looks like it would be a funnel or corner of a woods, that way you know where to head in the morning, , get there, and hang out, while you're there the first day look around for better spots. You may find a better tree and deer walk by somewhere else, then mark that tree or location for the next day and go for it! I usually have success the 2nd or 3rd day on public land after i see where they are going in and out.(i dont bring a game camera)
    Good luck man!

IMO ACME Mapper 2.0 is the best place to start some online planning. I started using this, this year, and believe I learned a lot more about the area I hunt then I ever did before on the ground. Find some funnels, food sources, bedding areas and just take a seat. I've had the unthinkable happen to me on state land and still saw some nice deer. Good Luck

Yeah I get home in about two weeks too, I think the season starts the 27th for where I live. Hopefully I can get 4-5 days in while I'm on vacation.

in terms of how far to walk in, you shouldnt have to hike 2 hours to find deer. the deer in that area will be use to the road noise and most likely wont be spooked by it. My father in law owns some land that is maybe 200 yards off the county highway. Hes been shooting bucks out of there for years. Like i said before, find those funnels and post up near those.
