Don't cheer against UNC if you happen to attend a game there. This would be unbelievable if there were no video. http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/video/6605651/ http://beyondthearc.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/12/14/2151944.aspx
Hey...I'm NO UNC fan....lol. But.....I'd like to know what the boy REALLY said. Are there things said in a quiet arena that would warrant removal? IMO....yes. Only Roy and King know what was said, though. Weird, no doubt.
Agreed. On ESPN during the UNC-Texas game they said that the fan's vulgarity made even the parents uncomfortable. I remember when Re**** played the Maryland fans took vulgarity and obscenity to a whole new level with the "F*** You JJ" chants and signs saying things like JJ's brother was a gay, etc. etc....That definitely warrants removal
I did a google search on "unc fan ejected" and this is typical of what I found: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basket...ut-heckling-fan-at-the-Dean-?urn=ncaab,208335 With six minutes to go in North Carolina's blowout win over Presbyterian yesterday at The Dean Dome, Roy Williams instructed security personnel to eject a fan who had heckled the Heels' Deon Thompson during a free throw attempt. The man, wearing a Presbyterian shirt and sitting a few rows behind the Carolina bench, yelled "hey Deon, don't miss it!" during the second free throw, which caused Williams to turn around, exchange some words and, eventually, point him out to security. WRAL has video of the incident. Drunk, profane fans are a menace at games, but there's no indication the ejected party was either of those things. "Hey Deon, don't miss it," is about as tame a taunt as there gets in a college basketball arena. That may be the nicest heckle Deon Thompson hears all season. When the Tar Heels go play at Duke, such a statement might be considered a compliment. When asked about the move after the game, Williams said: "I don't think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let's don't make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don't think anybody should yell negative things toward our players (when) you come in on our tickets to watch our game." Let's not make it a bigger thing than it is? That's easy to say after Roy himself made it a bigger thing by having some cops grab a guy who was rooting for his team in an acceptable (if slightly obnoxious) manner. If the other people sitting around the Presbyterian fan were offended, they could have gone to security themselves. What's a two-time national championship coach doing worrying about what some guy from a tiny little school is saying in a game that his team would end up winning by 39? Isn't this a little beneath Roy Williams? Because Roy is normally such an affable guy and this came in a meaningless game in the middle of December, there won't be much criticism lobbed his way. There should be. It was inappropriate for Williams to censor a fan that wasn't breaking any rules. He overstepped his bounds and should be embarrassed about his actions. Dan Wiederer makes a good point on his blog The Fast Break: If Mike Krzyzewski had ejected a heckler at Cameron Indoor can you imagine what the public outcry would have been? We'd be comparing him to Kim-Jong Il. When good ol' Roy does it, it's folky and home-spun and protective of his players. It's a little thing and, in the long run, not a big deal. On most nights, Roy Williams is as classy a man as there is in college basketball. Saturday, as we all do sometimes, he slipped up.
Another take from a Carolina paper: Raleigh Telegram CHAPEL HILL - After having an opposing team's fan ejected for yelling "miss it" during a Carolina freethrow attempt, UNC men's basketball coach Roy Williams said at a press conference after the game last Saturday that fans in the stands should not say anything "negative" about his players during games. In apparently what is a newly proposed standard for fan behavior at basketball games in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Williams' statements seem to contradict decades of each school's traditions of heckling opposing teams that even include the words "go to Hell State" in the Carolina fight song. Indeed, Williams' request for fans to say something nice or not all seems to fly in the face of what happens at a normal basketball game anywhere along Tobacco Road at Carolina, Duke, or NC State University. TAUNT MADE AT BLOW-OUT GAME The situation began during the blowout game between Presbyterian College and UNC last Saturday night, December 12th, at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill. During the lopsided 103-64 victory against Presbyterian, Carolina easily dominated the boards against the much smaller university. Some Carolina fans even wondered why such a game was scheduled. "I am not sure what value there is in a game like this," said one Carolina fan on the Tarheelfanblog.com website. "Presbyterian is a really bad team and UNC dominated the game from the very beginning." Towards the end of the game, a man wearing a Presbyterian College shirt standing in the crowd behind the Carolina bench was yelling for Carolina player Deon Thompson to miss a freethrow. According to various sources, the man's exact words were "Deon, miss it!" with no expletives or other foul language involved. In a video of the incident captured by WRAL-TV, Coach Williams can be seen talking to a staffer at his bench and then pointing to the Presbyterian fan in the crowd. According to one report, Coach Williams said to the fan "Shut up, yes, I'm talking to you," while pointing to the man. The fan was then forcibly taken out of the stadium by three uniformed police officers while he seems to ask "why" on his way out of the seats. In a press conference after the game, Coach Williams defended his actions, saying that no one should say anything negative against his players in the Dean Dome. "When an idiot runs out on a field, what they do now is they don't show the idiot, it gives them more publicity," said Williams. "I don't think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period," said Williams. "Let's not make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don't think anybody should yell negative things toward our players who come in on our tickets to watch our game." When asked if the fan said anything vulgar, Williams said "that's all I'm going to say about that." NATIONAL ATTENTION AND DEBATE IN NC The incident made national attention and has been posted around the Internet, including the front page of Yahoo's homepage earlier this week. Indeed, Coach Williams' actions have been debated in North Carolina quite heavily. In an editorial in the Fayetteville Observer, sports writer Dan Wiederer called out Williams on his behavior. "There’s no way around it," commented Wiederer. "Williams’ reaction was overblown and totally inappropriate." "And doesn’t this set a new standard for all Carolina games, giving security at Maryland and N.C. State and Duke every reason to eject any Tar Heel fan who heckles in their arenas?" asked Wiederer. In online chat rooms and sports blogs, many people have defended Williams' behavior, saying that fans should be smart enough to not go into another team's "home" just behind the bench and cheer against the home team loudly. "If I am hosting a gathering at my home and somebody acts like an idiot and begins ruining the experience for everybody else, I would make them leave, which is why I have no problem with what Roy did," said one Carolina fan at the Tarheelfanblog.com website. Other Carolina fans questioned what the big deal was about and suggested that all fans should cheer for their team -- or against the other team. "In my opinion this is college basketball," said another fan. "You go to a game to cheer for your team and taunt the other. I’m a UNC fan and I totally think Roy should have just let it go. You can’t expect me to believe that Roy has never heard anybody make a taunt toward one of his players. Give me a break!" THE EJECTED FAN SPEAKS OUT The fan who was ejected was later identified as Brian King from Concord, North Carolina. Although some have claimed that King did not have a ticket for those seats, he says that he was attending the game with several friends who were Carolina fans and did have a ticket. According to the Fayetteville Observer newspaper, King emailed the newspaper and flatly denied any insinuations by the UNC Athletics Department that he was drunk or inebriated, calling those reports completely false. "The people that I was sitting with were all Chapel Hill graduates and lifetime friends," said King. "We were having a good time at the game watching my little team get whipped by mighty UNC. I also was absolutely not intoxicated. Initially I wasn't really upset, more dumbfounded by the situation until I read [UNC Athletic Director] Kirschner's spin. That is absolutely wrong to say those false things about me and to lie about what Coach Williams told his guys to do. Look at the video. Kirschner is lying about what Coach Williams instructed his goons to do." In all of the hype surrounding the story, one question remains to be asked. Did Deon make the freethrow? Yes. Evidently, the fan's taunts had no effect as he made the shot easily. ::
You just have to love karma LOL. Wonder if ol' roy will cry after his team gets destroyed again tonite. currently 68-35 ya gotta love it
Vitale says williams is "coaching his heart out like it's a 1 point game". LMAO It's alomost a 40 point game. williams is coaching ****.
Dang, Trev... You guys went 3 deep in the NIT last year....before losing to a team probably ranked in the top 90. You should be proud.
Actually handled it as classy as you can after the season they've had and minutes after getting blown out. Matter of fact he was still coaching in his PC.
You must not have reading comprehension. I hope they enjoy their Karma after all the NIT talk I heard last year. That obviously states that I was defending our season last year, right? I am as proud of last year's season as UNC is of their 16-16 trainwreck this year.
I agree. When teams like UK and KY are playing in the NIT.....it makes my heart warm. I wish UK had won it....and I hope UNC does. Nothing (college basketball-wise) would make me happier than seeing either team having a "hang the banner in the rafters" night.....to hang their NIT championship banner. I mean..................How's that for "tradition"?
Teams like UK and Carolina are going to have years like last year for Kentucky and this year for UNC because of the type of players they recruit. They recruit talented players with NBA futures and you'll have lapses in recruiting where freshmen classes can't compete. Look at UNC and UK this year. Kentucky obviously had the best class in the country but Carolina's was strong too. The difference is that Kentucky's freshmen can compete while UNC's are likely a year or two away from being elite ACC players. I would rather experience a down year between a couple National Championships, like UNC is doing as opposed to be consistently a Top 10 team every year like Duke with nothing to show for it, because they recruit 4 year guys.
That's a rosy picture. I think UNC's won 4 "modern-day" Nat'l championships. Yeah.....if they were doing it every 3-4 yrs, I'd agree with you. One in the 80's.....One in the 90's and two in the '00's ain't exactly doing that. And....you're attributing UK's '09 season to "they recruit talent with NBA futures"? Really? Beofre Teflon Don came along........which class/players were examples of this type of recruiting?
Patrick Patterson and Jodie Meeks were NBA players on last years roster, but I agree the past several years UKs problem has been talent. Clearly not a problem anymore since (who is Teflon Don?) came along.... Jeff do you even have a favorite NCAA basketball team, or do you just enjoy cutting down whatever team is currently talked about? As for the NIT championship last year, don't think UK would hang a banner...hell it was rumored they were going to turn down the invitation in the first place if it wasn't for pissing off the league. The NIT and Helms titles mean nothing to this program. Hell Final Fours are the starting point for banners in Rupp.
Old news.... did you catch the game last night folks? LOL If it had been in Roys house everyone would have been escorted "from the building". LOL I think Roy over reacted on this one... but hey, his arm was hurting at the time. Kind of like a PMS moment..
I didn't say anything about them doing it every 3-4 years. I said they've won two titles in the last 5 years and are down this year and, in comparison to Duke who has consistently accomplished nothing lately, I'll take that as a UNC fan. And yes, Kentucky before Calipari (sp?) got there still recruited NBA talent. Kentucky sells itself. They just didn't develop. It's like when Phil Fulmer experienced his downfall at Tennessee in football, everyone attributed to a lack of talent. Well yes, the players they recruited, which they thought had professional futures, which they thought were going to be pretty good.. didn't develop. Which is often a result of the coaching, anyway.
That sounds like a recipe for a goat boinkin' session. "Yeah....but your team................................." Of course I have a favorite team. What diff. does it make....who that is? I've said two things about UK....and nothing negative about UNC (the Univ.). #1 - UK sold their soul, hiring Calipari. I thought their place in NCAA basketball history (and given their recent history with citations) wouldn't allow them to do this. I was wrong. #2 - Calipari. He's a cancer. It's not "if" you guys are gonna get caught. It's "when". The thing that's REALLY sad is, though......you don't care. If you go to the final 4....or win a championship....and it's vacated 5 yrs later......you don't care. It's "worth it". That's sad.
LMAO, I love ignorant posts....You do realize that the rumor right now is that Memphis is in the process of winning their appeal to have their season reinstated since they indeed had no control over it since the NCAA itself cleared Rose to play prior to the season. Will that change your mind at all? (rhetorical question, I know the answer to that one) Calipari has been caught doing NOTHING wrong, has NEVER been mentioned in NCAA investigations, He had a player except cash from an NBA scout and he recruited a player who later it turned out cheated on his entrance exam to get in college. Do you truly believe he is this terrible cancerous person, or is it just fun and convenient to talk about. Hell even flawless Coach K has had a situation EXACTLY as Caliparis, he was of course not punished and it was quickly swept under the rug. All I'm saying is of the great coaches, NONE have a perfectly clean record and in nearly ALL cases including Cal and K it was out of the coaches hands on how the player chose to cheat the system. UNC, UK, and KU are the top 3 programs in basketball....they have 3 of the top 5-6 coaches in basketball.....they have the most wins in basketball....and they also all have infractions in their past along with nearly every other team in D 1 basketball. It gets old hearing you spew the same old argument about Cal/Kentucky being the Devil when you completely ignore actual facts and equivalent examples that happened at the school you just so happen to like...it's almost funny actually. you mention that UNCs titles are hardly modern happening in the 80s and 90s and two recently, yet UK's last citation in the late 80s/early 90s under Sutton was "recent history with citations". Gotta love hypocrisy. UNC won 2 of the last 5 national championships, and has the second most wins ever....I HATE the program and LOVE that they are having a down year, but I'm not dumb enough to question their recent dominance or historical tradition.
